LA Health Officials Take Action After Local Supermarket Sells Raccoons As Food

February 10, 2015 11:11 PM

TEMPLE CITY (CBSLA.com) — The Health Department has taken action after a local supermarket’s frozen foods section featured an unusual item.

Inspectors from the LA County Health Department visited the Metro Supermarket in Temple City on Tuesday, after being informed that the market was selling raccoons as food.

Employees at the market declined to appear on camera, but did show entire raccoons, frozen, bagged, and selling for $9.99 per pound. The employees say raccoon is considered a delicacy in China.

Customer Christina Dow was at the market, and upon seeing the frozen raccoons, filmed the scene on her cell phone. She shared the video on social media.

“The way it’s packaged in the store, it’s so real, and it’s so fresh, and you don’t see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them, and their expression, with their tongue hanging out,” Dow said.

Dow also went on to contact the LA County Health Department, who says that selling raccoons as food may indeed be perfectly legal, depending on the origins of the meat.

The market has ceased selling raccoons, since the department’s visit, until it and be reviewed and officially approved.

CBS2 contacted a number of local agencies, including the LA County District Attorney’s office. However, none of them were immediately able to say whether selling raccoons as food was legal or not.

Store employees say they’ve been selling raccoons for years, and never experienced any issues until now.

Wouldn't have made the news in Arkansas - unless there was a shortage in the meat section at the Winn-Dixie or Food Lion, of course. ;)

I wish I had known about this. I have a trapping license here in California. I have caught about 20 raccoons over the last year...

The way they are described makes one think that there is not a lot of prep done to the carcass prior to freezing. That really cuts down on overhead and they can still get $9.99 a pound. Then again they are not all that handsome without their coats. If you like dark meat this is the critter for you, at least that is what grandma always said.

I suspect that "keepin' it real" as far as freezing "as is" with little to no processing also allows the buyer to know exactly what they are getting...and not getting...possum or something domesticated...ruff...meow...

Damn L.A. Yuppies never been to Chinatown or Little Italy back in the day...everything imaginable hung from some windows.

During SERE there were three TF-160 guys and myself going through E&E together. The last day of E&E phase (after HUGO departed the AO) we did a road crossing. Lo and behold there was a young racoon roadkill still steaming in the morning air. Young buck sergeant darted across the road scooping up breakfast smooth as silk. Roasted racoon and rock hard boiled field corn - we were eating like kings!

What I would have given for some Dillo Dust and a Blue Star...

In honor of Dusty, I was going to say/ask .....

Q: "How many Arkansaians ... Arkansasioans .... Awwww screw it .... REDNECKS from Arkansas, does it take to eat a raccoon?"

A: "Three ... One to eat it and Two to watch for cars."

Now I see I'm gonna have to add SOF types to the mix as well. :munchin
