I'm sure it's been posted on here in the past, but on today's date 70 years ago, The 6th Ranger Battalion, Alamo Scouts and Filipino Guerillas freed the Japanese held prisoners at Cabanatuan. "The Great Raid".

Was surprised to read this article about it on CNN of all places..

http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/29/opinion/lauder-great-raid-cabanatuan-pow-camp-1945/index.html

A good short synopsis can be found here.

Or just google and come up with thousands of hits.

I searched and didn't find anything posted on here today and thought it good to post a reminder....An operation that still sets the standard.

I wasn’t aware of the raid until I saw the movie. I really enjoyed it. Heroes.

While with 1st SFG I visited the site about 13-14 years ago. Nothing physically from that time remained. If I recall correctly, the camp site is now farm fields. If you think about it, that is appropriate. The land returned to purpose. I recall that there was a memorial marker but little else. The site was off the beaten path and definitely not a tourist attraction.

For those interested in other opns in that AO, as well as this one, highly recommend Larry Alexander's book covering the Alamo Scouts:
