Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died, state television report.
His brother Salman had become king, it said in a statement attributed to Salman.
King Salman has called on the family’s Allegiance Council to pay allegiance to Muqrin as his crown prince and heir.
The news broke shortly after midday, NZT, hours after rumours of the kings death were denied by a Saudi journalist and a member of the royal family.
The king had been in hospital since December suffering from pneumonia.
Markets had kept a close eye on the health of the king of the world’s top oil producer, a country that also has influence over Muslims through its guardianship of Islam’s holiest sites.
King Abdullah, who took power in 2005 after the death of his half-brother King Fahd, was thought to be 91, although official accounts were unclear. He underwent surgery in the past few years related to a herniated disc.
