View Full Version : Smithsonian magazine's list of the 100 most significant people in U. S. history
Pretty interesting list. Palin's inclusion sure stirred up a hornets nest, though. Who's not included is even more interesting.

Bill Hickok was not a carney.
I think you mean Buffalo Bill Cody.
And Schwarzenegger is Austrian, IIRC, NOT German.

Professionalsoldiers.com already did this years ahead of the Smithsonian, though we limited it to most significant never elected president.

He was involved briefly with Cody's Wild West Show.
Hickok's national reputation as the West's finest and fastest gunslinger soon led him to the stage. He starred as himself in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show in 1872 and 1873.

IIRC, Cody did not start "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" until 1882, six years after Hickok's demise.
I believe Hickok played a part in Ned Buntline's stage play with Cody named "Scouts of the Plains" in 1873 and 1874.

This guy is a no go, Christopher Columbus, he's one not American, and two the USA did not exist when he landed.
"[S]ignificant people in U. S. history" ;) Hitler and Hirohito may have made the list.
ETA: It does say "people" so Secretariat is out! In this slot I'd put Ted Williams. He covers a lot of bases, so to speak. ;)

Where's Benjamin Franklin? Also, I know since it's U.S. history that American people were favored over foreigners on this list, but some foreigners were too important to leave out so...
Where's Hitler? Where's Osama bin Laden?
Also, where's Kanye West? Just kidding....:D

Same goes for Vesppuci and De Verazzano. If exploring new territory makes you a citizen than Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are the most influential citizens of the moon.

No mention of needing to be a citizen, just having a significant influence on the country in the specific categories.

The actual title of the piece is the 100 most significant Americans of all time. Visiting North America doesn't make you an American. In plain English the title of American implies citizenship. YMMV.

Evidently it does now. Just saying.....

FWIW, the purpose of the special issue is as follows.A new, special issue of Smithsonian magazine attempts the impossible: to list out the most significant people in United States historyIf Arnold Schwarzenegger should on the list, he should be under cultural icons because of his impact on mass popular culture. But then, Spielberg, Lucas, or Katzenberg would better represent that impact.
Missing from the "empire builder" section is either Heffner, Flynt, or Stagliano.
The category "first women" should have neither Palin and Clinton. They represent the same thing: ambition over experience, and they have not transformed the political and social landscape. Ms. Winfrey is simply doing more lucratively what Helen Gurley Brown, Diana Vreeland, and others did better: empower Americans to live their lives as they wished.
MOO, a category missing from the list is intellectuals and within that category the following are potential candidates.
J. C. Calhoun
W.E.B. DuBois (moved from the "rebels & resisters" section)
W. A. Dunning
A. Hamilton
W. James
G. F. Kennan
A. C. Kinsey
A. T. Mahan
#TWOCENTS #YMMV
I'm tempted to buy this issue just to read the criteria used for this listing and their defense of those chosen.
