Too preoccupied to put that cup of joe down and return a salute?

Don't worry, our Commander in Chief doesn't either.

Why does this surprise anyone? He has shown his contempt for America since before '08 when he didn't show respect for the National Anthem. He does this kind of thing so frequently I don't understand how this is news?

I bet those Marines were thinking "At least it's not raining."

I remember some of the eff'd up salutes we received from newly commissioned medical officers when we were in 300F-1 at Fort Sam when Vietnam was in full swing. The POTUS' salute - even with a coffee cup - was pretty good compared to some of those we saw then.

I even received a 'peace sign' hand gesture one time from a newly inducted MD who was thoroughly confused when I saluted and said, "Airborne, Sir!"

You could always tell the newly minted MDs who came in with a direct commission to CPT/MAJ/LTC who looked 'lost', and to mess with them we used to render a snappy, normal looking salute and give a loud, "Airborne, Sir!" as we walked by - except the salute was with the left hand. We received some of the strangest looks from them because you could tell they knew something wasn't quite correct but they weren't quite sure what it was and we just kept walking as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Cheap entertainment for us young NCOs.

And so it goes...

You have to understand respect to show a lack of respect.
I doubt he meant anything by it.
The military is just one of the things he is in charge of, he doesn't really think about it much. It just is....

It's not like he had anything in his left hand that he could have switched his Latte' over ....

I believe you have the right of it. I doubt he feels anything more than boredom or disinterest unless someone poses an obstacle, then it's probably mostly irritation at the interruption of his internal monologue. Narcissists and sociopaths (but I repeat myself!) don't tend to view the rest of the world the same way as most of us.

Some salutes are only for show anyway...
...the difference is that professionals 'perform' even when they don't "mean it."

The guy with the styrofoam cup is hardly a professional.

...think about this, if you were sincere about your cause, and on your way to give a speech about global warming and living "green" would you be drinking coffee out of a styrofoam cup ?

It's the little things that speak volumes.

What is pissing me off is the MSM calling it the "Latte Salute." They are laughing or making it funny or a joke.

I made the effort - mission accomplished

That about sums up this administration.

It's not if anything really gets done it's if you made the effort.

He's had going on 6 years of experience as the POTUS. You'd think after all that time he would figure out, or ask someone the proper way to return a salute. As Commander in Chief, you should also be mindful of the morale of your subordinates from the E-1 to the O-7. They, In my opinion, deserve better than that.

Perhaps the nations "real " first black president can give him some pointers on the proper way to salute.

Well it's not as bad as Reagans left hand salute, or Bush "dog" salute.

pointing out another person's mistake does not make his mistake okay. and it just makes people who do it look like a snitch who will not take responsibility for their own actions.

I wouldn't have a problem if he just wouldn't salute, it's a "tradition" resurrected by Reagan, but I do have a problem with him saluting in a "half-ass" gesture. Either salute correctly or don't salute at all.

Absolutely agree. He’s a civilian and not required to salute. If he’s going to continue with it, he should do it right and do it genuinely. As others have stated his focus is elsewhere, like finding the camera in the crowd.

The video link below is from the JFK library and captures some footage from President Kennedy’s visit to Fort Bragg on October 12, 1961 – an iconic day in our Special Forces history. At 02:27 and 03:13 of the footage, JFK returns the salutes with a head nod, greetings, and a handshake. In all cases he looked the soldiers in the eye, and actually recognized them.

It doesn’t matter to me if the recognition is a returned salute, a handshake, or a nod of the head. What matters is that it is done genuinely. Look them in the eye like Kennedy.

That's the Socialist Salute, it's always half assed and with complete disrespect.

I'm amused that anyone gave a shit. Zero has already shown his incompetence again and again.

Cant we discuss global warming instead? :munchin

Salutes are not required when saluting is obviously inappropriate. (Example: A person carrying articles with both hands, or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impracticable) It is not required to salute a senior person or return the salute to a subordinate...

...a buck privatew on his second or third day in boot camp is armed with this knowledge.

In context, the Commander in Chief halfway through his second tour either knows this, or has NEVER bothered to learn. His indifference should be the issue, not the crispness of his saltue. The recognition between two countrymen is the issue. A stern gaze and a nod of the head would have been completely appropriate.

I'm still more interested in why someone with such deep seeded concern about global warming is drinking his beverage from a styrofoam cup, on his way to give a speech about how gloabal warming is Americas fault.
...by the way, thank for continuing your American apology campaign mr president.

As far as "Bush did it" "Regan did it" et all...
...odd how NOTHING seems to be owned by the POTUS. Everything he does is tied to someone elses failure. How quaint.

As far as throwing the dog a bone...
...I sincerly wish for you to also be the benefactor of such respectful generaosity.

Something about the "If I throw a dog a bone I don't want to know if it taste good or not." mentality that sounds a LOT like "let them eat cake"...
...which after all, is EXACTLY how this administration operates.

His indifference should be the issue, not the crispness of his salute.

You nailed him!

This is the premise of the entire buggaboo about POTUS: His indifference. The tragedy is that he's got the job of representing the integrity of the free world, and he's indifferent about that, too. Indifference applies to everything he's done since winning the raffle back in '08. He's a narcissist, and nothing outside of himself matters at all. Imagine what it's like working every day for this POS. How'd you like to be that Marine having the job of saluting his Royal Turdness, or the poor Marine who has to hold his umbrella while he rants on and on about himself? That has to be the worst set of orders in today's military! I wouldn't want him to salute me...I'd want a ticket to Canada!!
