"SANFORD - The "Memphis Belle," a restored WWII B-17 Flying Fortress bomber will take to the skies on September 20-21.

The B-17's mission today is to educate the people of America, remembering the World War II crews who never made it home.

The "Memphis Belle," named after a bomber that flew 25 missions over Europe in World War II, is now considered a living museum and part of The Liberty Foundation's 2014 Salute to Veterans tour.

The aircraft will be open to the public and available for limited flights and ground tours on Sept. 20-21 at Sanford/Lee County Airport, Airport Terminal Building, 700 Rod Sullivan Road. Flights be held hourly both days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with ground tours afterward through 7:30 p.m...."

Your chance to see B-17 up close.

Saw it there several years ago. Impressive. Unfortunately, I'm not so big a fan as to pay the price of a seat on a flight.

My mother had a cousin (well, I guess he was mine, too) who was a mechanic on the MB at the end. He said that their guts were in knots on the last few missions thinking that their luck could not hold out. I asked him if the mechanics loved the aircraft or the crew. He said that it was usually the aircraft since the crew changed but, with the MB, it was the crew because they got to know them so well.
