Helmand's Golden Age

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/2014/newsspec_8529/index.html

Interesting story about an American engineer in Afghanistan in the early 1950's. Has a number of film clips he took.

"...Glenn Foster carried with him a 16mm camera, and in the seven years that he was to live and work in Afghanistan he shot hour upon hour of film - of Afghan life and landscapes, of engineering projects, of Christmas parties in the American community. And in those hours of film he captured the country in a hopeful moment of its history that is all but forgotten...."

That was very well done - great story. I wish it could be put on laptops and shown to younger Afghanis in villages. Wonder if they have any idea that that is their heritage.

Same as Iran. My grandparents spent 2 years there in the 1950s as part of an oil-related work assignment. They had nothing but good things to say about their time in Iran, how much they liked the Iranians, all the development that was going on, etc. The local women wore western clothes and moved about freely. My grandma used to go to the markets by herself - something that would be impossible today.

Fundamental Islam, so wow.
