For all history buffs, this is a pretty good view of a soldier's kit through the years ... 1066 to 2014

Yeah it's all English/British, but it's still cool to see how the basic items a soldier took into battle changed throughout the years.

I like the mace. Trench Warfare at its finest. And most Medieval.

Interesting to see how 395 lbs. of light-weight gear evolves though time.

Very interesting post!

I find warfare of the "middle ages" fascinating. Very close and personal.

Thanks for posting.

Can anyone ID the ONE ITEM that is in EVERY picture shown?

I can tell you it's NOT a sharp pointy thing.

An army marches on its stomach - Napoleon Bonaparte or Frederick the Great of Prussia or Claudius Galen, chief physician to the Roman army.

Well....if this is a multiple choice question (no question mark, but the word "or" does separate the three names), I'll say that it is attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte!

More than 100 pounds of stone and less than 150 pounds of feathers...

The mace was the first thing that my eye went to.

Warfare was exceptionally brutal in those times with everything being so "up close and personal."

Where is the guerilla load?

Or the Rhodesian Light Infantry Fireforce load?

Or the Philippine Scout Ranger load?

Interesting.

What is the small, C-shaped item that appears in about four of the kits?

I believe that is a steel striker for starting fires (along with flint pictured just next to it).

I wonder if the Vietnam era soldiers were the last to carry pictures of not only their girlfriends but their cars, too?
