Sriracha CEO Compares California to Communist Vietnam, Texas Officials to Court Company

by Breitbart Texas 16 May 2014, 7:12 AM PDT 119 post a comment

Sriracha hot sauce manufacturer Huy Fong Foods has spent the past few months in an intense legal battle with the city of Irwindale California over their plant’s caustic smell. The lawsuit has already caused a partial shutdown of Sriracha’s Irwindale factory, after a restraining order to shut down the plant entirely was denied by a California Judge.

According to Huy Fong Foods CEO, David Tran, the city’s over zealous persecution of the 30 year old California plant reminds him of growing up in Communist Vietnam.

“Today, I feel almost the same. Even now, we live in (the) USA, and my feeling, the government, not a big difference," he said.

At a local city council meeting, the New York Times reported that Tran asked, “Why do you want to shut me down...I’m not sure why the U.S.A. lets local government do stupid things like this.

No frig should be without a bottle of Sriracha Sauce.

That stuff will go on top of anything - and taste good.

Hope he makes the move.

these rat-bastards have soiled their own nest. Let the good people move to Texas and let the feral-libs try to survive on their own. Screw them.

Agreed Pete! But I don't refrigerate mine!

I couldn't buy the stuff last time I was at the grocery store so I bought a generic brand and it was not even close to the same taste.

Thanks California!

I work for a company that has a similar situation. I work for a "fish reduction plant"; we take the leftover fish scraps from canneries and process them. We make 3 main products: fish meal for petfood, fish bone for fertilizer, and fish oil that goes back to aquaculture.

The plant has been in the same area for 65+ years. 3 years ago a subdivision of houses was built about a quarter mile down the road. While I admit our plant is VERY smelly, and we were here first, we are in compliance the standards set by DEQ for air and water quality. However, we receive numerous complaints from these newcomers and are currently in legal battle as well.

I blame the people, and therefore the government, for being weak and giving in.

The problem is that the "feral-libs" move to other states and bring their utopian ideas with them (see Colorado). They're like a virus, they just move to a healthy host, destroy it then move on to another.

The state of Kalifornia can hardly afford to further erode their tax base, who is gonna pay for all their giveaways?

The current state of California is a shame.

I try to get out of LA as quickly as I can.

I would think an unbiased analysis of what conditions and actions(as well as inactions..government just getting out of the way) led to the rise of Silicon Valley would be well worth it.

There's some pretty amazing history there.

I'm no expert on the history of the area, but I know the history of the semiconductor industry and slices of the tech industry there.

As I understand it, a strong education system combined with some world class "hub" universities, affordable housing, good infrastructure, a great climate, and local/state government that supported new business formation were some of the characteristics that helped Silicon Valley germinate.

Apple orchards with no value added were replaced by world class bleeding edge technology export companies, that were slowly suffocated by a never ending cycle of elected good idea fairies.

At least that's the way it looks from this angle.

Currently 80 degrees at the beach. The weather is just right for drinking. I am going to catch some sun then mosey down to the pier to watch the sights and the kings game 7.

You guys keep on hating. I'll be at the bar.

Give us a heads-up as to when, then go to the trash can across from the Mermaid (on the strand) and give us a wave on their webcam. ;)

So an unhappy Vietnamese immigrant businessman equates life in CA to life in Vietnam and Breitbart falls for his hyperbole? Good one.

Pho real? I have to try that! California has serious drawbacks but I won't be moving until my kids get out of school. Right now, I'm enjoying a baseball game in zero humidity and it's 75 degrees outside! Living an hour from the beach and an hour from the mountains is a real plus.

He is talking about government intervention in his business. Not quite as simple as you put it.

The 'business' of local governments is to intervene on behalf of their communities. I would argue it's not as simple as either Mr Tran or Breitbart put it.

Or Irwindale, population 1,422. They have a history of enticing businesses to move there. They gave Al Davis 10 million dollars to "consider" moving the Raiders there. Huy Fong Foods was originally in Rosemead, CA. Did they move the whole operation to Irwindale with an enticement, or do they have two plants? Where does a tiny community like that get the revenue to shell out $10 dollars for nothing?

Irwindale is on my shit-list, anyway. There was a beautiful shooting range at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in an old quarry. Developers started building houses closer and closer to the range. In a couple of years, the range was closed by the City of Irwindale. Now, instead of driving 20 minutes to a nice range, I have to drive for an hour....

Sriracha CEO Compares California to Communist Vietnam, Texas Officials to Court Company

Could be a little truth in that comment. Every year I feel more and more like a boat person.

DHL spent millions building a new terminal at March ARB about seven years ago. They calculated that after a few years it would begin pumping millions of dollars into the local economy. Actually a pretty good idea considering that when March AFB downgraded to a reserve installation the local economy lost about 50 million dollars per year. Thanks Clinton. Anyway, after being in operation for only a few months people in the local community began complaining about the night time flights. I live directly under the flight path and DHL did everything they could to keep the planes quiet. Didn't bother me a bit but a few folks in the community took up a crusade against DHL and they eventually closed the facility. Typical of what goes on in California. The environmental rules and regulations are getting ridiculous and just make it harder and harder to do business in this state. It's a path to self destruction.

RL- I don't get out to Raahauge's much, I don't shoot shotgun as much as I did before. My son has a membership at Burro Canyon but if we need to shoot longer ranges, we go out to Angeles, off the 210 at Osborne. The good thing about it is I can stop at Taco Nazzo on the way home from both...

If you do shoot shotgun, I would recommend Triple B Sporting Clays at the 60 at Rosemead. They have a long sporting clays course, plus trap and skeet, and it is not far from you.

Well I am now paying STATE income tax of like 13%. Even if I move, though, I still have to pay state incomes taxes in all of the states where my firm has offices, so moving would not get me out of paying CA taxes (or NY, or MA, or . . .) :(

I've lived here for seven years, came here with the wife, got divorced, share custody of our daughter so I won't be leaving anytime soon. But, the job market in Orange County is pretty bad, housing costs seemed to be based on the idea you'll always have roomates, and pay really isn't any better for the same technical field than in other states that are cheaper to live in. I calculated it, and I spent almost 100k in rent in 7 years for a 2 bedroom apartment, in many other states I would've nearly paid off a house. Also, ever since that Obamacare iniative-- jobs that were normally W2 are becoming 1099, and working as a subcontractor is perilous, because there will be work, and then no work with no notice. The weather is certainly nice, and if you have a good profession like being an Engineer or Lawyer it's probably a decent place to live, or if you bought a house in the 70s.
