A U.S. District Court judge ruled Wednesday that Arizona and Kansas can require anyone registering to vote to prove their citizenship and the federal Election Assistance Commission cannot block them.

Excellent. As WI's own "Voter ID law" is still ping-ponging the appeals process and this precedent may help, especially since - in absence of some other form of ID - the state makes available an ID, free, for that purpose. Simple; you just have to prove who you are.

I've bet some higher court overturns this because it "places an undue burden on the individual".That's true Pete; here, basic state ID requires proof of citizenship OR proof of legal status in US, so it's not a "voter" ID in the sense of vetting citizenship. But the other issue you mention correctly is what the argument has been - "undue burden" - and that's what the kerfuffle in the courts is all about. Someone would have to get their largest point of contact off the couch, put down the remote & go get one (at no cost to them other than calories burned).

I think I will start telling everyone I'm Mexican and when they ask for proof I'll tell them that it's too much of a burden.

I wonder if I can do that with the IRS, DMV, SSN Adminstration, VA, State and County tax offices, etc. etc. etc.?

O will whip out his pen and phone to shoot this down. After all you don't need a legal birth certificate to be prez, why have one to vote. I do wish AZ all the luck getting this done.

A state could just hold a separate "election" for president on a day earlier than the general Election Day and call it a "recommendation referendum" to the state legislature.
The state legislature could make any rules they want for this "recommendation referendum" (the Constitution give the Feds no authority over this other than determining the days of elector appointment and voting).

The votes could remain uncounted until Election Day, then they would be counted and the state legislature would appoint electors.
It is unlikely voters would want to vote in two separate elections.

How's that for voter suppression...
