Being born and raised in North Florida I can honestly say this sums it up:

"Union County Judge Dave Reimer popped in, too, saying: "People here traditionally register as Democrats to vote in local primaries, but they're very conservative. When I came here in 1983, there were only 54 registered Republicans in the whole county."

Election Supervisor Babs Montpetit was a little more direct. "People here are mostly fundamentalist Christians who work in the prisons," she said. "Do you think they're going to vote for the liberal senator from Massachusetts?""

People equate Democrat to liberal and Republican to conservative. It isn't always that cut and dried. North Florida is dominated by conservatives that happen to be registered Democrats. The assumption that a Blue county will vote Blue is what happens when you aren't familiar with the residents of that county.

This idiotic conspiracy theory floated by Keith Olbermann and that woman in Utah is a joke to anyone who knows Florida. I have debunked it to the point of boring people to tears in a string of posts here: http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4236

The variations between what votes Bush received and what he "should" have received, if voter registration was the deciding factor as these conspiracy theorists seem to think, was actually greater in Boston than it was in most Florida counties.
