This morning I received an automatic renewal notice from McAfee ? I inquired immediately and of course got someone from Southern India ( No customer service in the US  ) I gave them the order number they sent but answered no other questions about email address, billing address ect... Will work through my bank not them. I had McAfee once back when I got my first computer and bought it in a store. Searched mail and found the letter below. The only purchase that remotely connects to any of these companies was from Dell when I bought a computer. I have decided to use only pre paid cards for any purchase over the inter net from here on out. Might be worth a check of your mail and watch spam closely before you delete all...

Announcement

January 7, 2014

To our valued customers:

I'm excited to share the news that Intel and McAfee have come together to form Intel Security. Together, we are committed to giving you the confidence to use technology to its — and your — fullest potential.

Every day, more and more of our routine activities shift online — connecting with family and friends, keeping up on world events, shopping, reading, learning, creating, conducting business, innovating — all through computers, smartphones, tablets and other IP-enabled devices that get smarter, smaller, and more versatile all the time. Technology is the great enabler, and in many ways has democratized information and opportunity. What used to only be possible in the physical world is now not only possible — but sometimes faster and easier — in the digital realm, from anywhere, anytime, by anyone, through any enabled device.

When Intel purchased McAfee in 2010, it represented their vision that a world of pervasive technology requires equally pervasive security. With the Internet of Things becoming a reality, security must be embedded on every architecture and every device.

Phones and tablets now carry the same computing power and opportunity as desktop computers, and, therefore, the same vulnerabilities and exposure to digital crime. We have a history of providing free mobile security for both Android and iOS devices. We intend to make a new mobile security solution freely available later this year with the goal of providing digital security to everyone on every mobile device around the world.

As we move forward, we will be applying Intel's history of innovation, performance, and trust to develop new digital security solutions to enrich people's lives around the world. In the meantime, there will be no immediate change to any of the McAfee products, solutions, or services you enjoy.

I want to thank you for being a valued customer. We're looking forward to bringing you even more innovative and effective digital security solutions in the future. For more information see www.intelsecuritygroup.com.

All my best and Happy New Year,

Gary Davis
Vice President, Global Consumer Marketing

John McAfee pulled a Colonel Kurts and has gone completely insane. He was living in shack in Belize with a 15 year old girl friend.
Besides just use windows or ADWare. They are free and just as good. Kind of a joke in the geek world that people are still paying for anti virus protection.

I saw where he killed his neighbor and evaded until his capture in an adjacent country EDIT: He fled from Belize to Guatemala, probably making several people well to do by nature of how that all works, I read he was making some threats about setting up an Oba Health care scam and assume he has sold his interests as a primary in the security company, but what authenticates text coming across the web... ... I had not been a customer for over 5 years, reading the fine print below what was sent ( not copied here) this went out to current and expired customers, what a way to do business. Big companies with no integrity interested in short term gains. Checking with bank to confirm funds were withdrawn, still don't really know how they would get my info?

Dump Mcafee and download the FREE Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft. It works GREAT! I've had it on 7 computers over the last 4 or 5 years without a problem.

I have used AVIRA(free) for years. It stands toe-2-toe with the top virus software.

MSE is good, but I never trust MS..

Here is an overview, a bit dated..

Microsoft Security Essentials vs Avira vs avast! vs AVG: Best free anti-virus/anti-malware program for Windows

Cough. . .I used the Microsoft Security Essentials recently on a high end win7 (liquid cooled) box and it screwed with it within two weeks. And of course me being a dumbass forgot the images I made wouldn't restore on the new advanced bios. (ie. used the old clonezilla image disk to image it). 4 hours gone... And no, don't trust MS - watch the traffic heading their way from your network sometime.

There isn't one anti-virus package that I have found that doesn't sooner or later crash a windows box - let alone slow it down alot. Guess it's better than getting a virus(?)

Most problems can mitigated by a decent router if setup properly and those that can afford it; router or appliance (not your toaster) based anti-virus options are less intrusive and resource intensive but aren't free.

Just a heads up to anyone who doesn't know: Microsoft Security Essentials is built into all Windows 8 computers. That plus Malwarebytes should do the job for most people.

Edit: I forgot to mention, using Chrome or Firefox and installing an adblocker extension is a great way to filter out most of the junk that pops up on the internet that causes you problems.

Just the embedded security in Fire Fox with a few apps is as good as McAfee. Stop giving people your money:D

I believe Chrome has the same features. But Fire Fox CEO told the NSA "no warrant, no info"

Google has a yearly competition (coming up) with some of the best security guys in the world. If they find an exploit or hack Google gives them 100K+. This year 2.7mil is in the pot. (Pwnium hacking competition)

Wonder how MS would fair
