For Julian and Joaquin Castro, politics runs in the family. The two brothers, both of whom represent the state of Texas in elected office - Julian as the mayor of San Antonio and Joaquin as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives - share an allegiance to the Democratic Party and a belief that their home state is in the process of changing from red to blue.
Maybe I'll think about retiring to Idaho instead.

Could happen. I moved out of Texas in '78 to enter the Military, and there were already too many damnyankees there, already. ;)
Texas may be turning blue (slowly), but those two are idiots and don't represent the state as a whole.

Those two idiots.
San Antonio has a Council-Manager style city government. The mayor has very little, if any, power. He does have a rather large pulpit but if he really thinks he or his brother were elected because of their politics then they should try banning guns and allowing late term abortions and see how long they keep their seats at the table. The power brokers on the north side pick the horses that take to the bit the best regardless of political affiliation.
Back on track, Texas might mellow a bit with the influx of kalifornians and carpet baggers looking for work but it will never budge on the big ticket items that Dims are based on. Bigger Gov, More regulation, lack of personal responsibility.

Texas may mellow a bit in the larger cities, get out into the countryside and things havn't changed that much.
As for the californians moving to Tx, a lot of them aren't just chasing a job, they are conservatives attempting to escape the PRK. They don't bring the typical leftist mindset with them, moreso a sense of gratitude when they experience the greater freedoms they moved to.
There are those that just chase a job and bring thier attitude with them, however it does seem they tend to congregate around austin or in the larger cities.
They might like to try to turn the political landscape in Tx, however word is out as to what they have in mind and things have changed in the past 20 years.
It isn't as easy for the left to sell thier agenda anymore, civilian disarmament laws over & above what currently exists? (aka: 'gun control') Not going to fly in tx........ever.
Wendy Davis, the current darling of the left down there, is already now having to answer questions as to the truthfulness of the narrative the left created for her. Her agenda isn't going to sell as easily as the left thinks it will.
The biggest thing is, those on the conservative right, for a lack of a better adjective, know what the left has planned for that state and they won't be caught off-guard. It may come to pass such as things are in the PRK, wherein the rural areas remain conservative and the big cities are flat-out leftist
However the population numbers are a bit better or offer somewhat better odds in Tx, as do the predominant cultural norms.
It will be a long non-stop fight, that is assured.

That's what Colorado thought.

That was a good 20 years ago, things back then were different than they are nowadays. The TV media no longer has the omnipotence it once had, witness Wendy Davis already having to answer questions about the narrative the TV media created.
The current governor (republican) is contemplating a 4th term as governor, Ann didn't get near that far.
It'll be a long non-stop fight, but folks already watched colorado and learned from it.
Culture is not static. As long as the demographics in Texas continue to tilt towards the influx of illegal aliens south of the border, who generally favor government entitlement programs, Texas will march towards becoming blue. They can be socially conservative all day long, but will vote democrat because the democrats are giving them stuff (or at least that is the way they will see it). It is inevitable.

I don't believe it's inevitable, then again I might be whistling loudly as I walk past the graveyard politically speaking.......
It did happen in the PRK, the left is trying it in Colorado, and they've openly stated they're going to try to do it in Tx. The difference nowadays being folks are more aware given the information they have at thier disposal, and the means to organize politically or act on that information. That or simply being aware of the truth, and not buying into the lies of the left.
The TV media no longer has the political power they once did, they still have a lot of power however they're no longer omnipotent in the face of the internet and talk radio. And that does affect culture in the norms that are accepted or considered acceptable.
It is a fact there's a percentage of our populace who believe the lies and no matter what truth, fact, or any form of logic you put in front of them, they'll reject it. There's nothing you can do about those folks, they're gone mentally and emotionally.
However there is a large percentage of our populace who either don't buy the political lies or simply aren't aware of the truth and when presented with that will accept it and reject the lies. It isn't a change that's going to happen immediately, that access to the truth and the results of it, but I do see the beginnings of it.
The PRK was subverted given people believed the lies of the left, the same game was pulled in Colorado and what were the results?
They recalled two leftist politicians and there's an open secession movement going now in that state. Neither would have happened 20+ years ago.
senator dianne fineslime again attempted to push through unconstitional civilian disarmament legislation, it failed utterly, why? 20 years ago it sailed on through, not this time, why?
Why did those things happen? Access to the truth of information and the ability to act on it. People had access to the truth, rejected the lies of the left and were able to act on it.
Are those things the end of the culture war? Not even close. To borrow a quote "It is not the end nor is it even the beginning of the end, but one thing is certain, it is end of the beginning" I suspect the worst of the culture war is now in front of us and that the changes are happening slowly is not an indication of failure, only the change is happening slower than we wish.
Don't underestimate the capacity of people to do stupid things. They elected BHO.....twice.
Texas was a staunch as in "vote the ticket" Blue State when I was growing up and the common term for it was "yellow dog Democrat" as in "They'd vote for an old, yellow dog if it ran as a Democrat."
An inevitable return to it or not, who knows?

The democrats of those days are nothing like the 'democrats' of nowadays.
I was a youngster growing up in Tx back then and they'd be called the Reagan democrats. The yellow dog democrats of back then would be considered conservatives nowadays and despite thier political affiliation, rightfully so.
