Picture was taken 52 years ago. I do not relate well to todays NFL, these are the guys I grew up with. I could name half of them.

Great shot! As a kid my favorite was Y.A. Tittle. Now as a FOG, I really appreciate him all that more. :lifter
My favorite was Johnny Unitas and I actually got to meet him when I was stationed at Ft. Knox.

Watched all of them play as I grew up and was in high school. :)
1961 NFL Championship game in WI - Green Bay 37 - Giants 0 and the first of 5 NFL Championships in 7 years for the Packers and their coach, Vince Lombardi. :lifter
That was back when I loved football - and the likes of 'Dandy' Don Meredith, Bart Starr, John Brodie (first NFL player to receive a $1M contract), Raymond Berry, Ron Kramer, Paul Hornung, etc.

Richard, I do believe that was the last game Y.A. played and he retired after it. Was it his helmet he kicked or the football at the end of the game?
I too loved watching football up until the late 70s when all the "protection" rules came into play. It was fun watching Sam Huff and his like try to run over guys like Jim Brown. :D

Longrange/Richard - was that the game where a beat up Ray Nitschke scored a TD from about the 40. I seem to recall seeing him lumbering down the side line all by himself. I also seem to recall Y.A. being sacked on the NYG 5. IIRC whoever it was that sacked him just picked him up and laid him on the ground rather gently. Classy move IMO. Wouldn't happen today. :(
Anyone remember Frank Ryan from the Cleveland Browns? IIRC he taught mathematics at Case University in the off season. Don't think too many of today's players could do that.
Oh and BTW, i had an uncle that played for the Eagles in the 50s - Tubby Thacker was a lineman/linebacker and weighed all of 175 lbs IIRC. :eek:

Trapper, yeah those were the days prior to 'roids and 'roid range on the field. However, some players, Sam Huff being one, actually went out there to hurt someone. On your question, I am not sure. My Dad and I watched so many games that they run together. I do know my Dad did not like Y. A. Title, thought he was a primadonna compared to a lot of the other QBs.

My Dad and I watched so many games that they run together. I do know my Dad did not like Y. A. Title, thought he was a primadonna compared to a lot of the other QBs.
Yeah Y.A. was a bit of a primadonna, but I liked him primarily because he was a FOG & one tough ol' bird. Liked George Blanda for the same reason. Gravitated to the Redskins when they were to Over-the- Hill gang under George Allen too. ;)

I loved watching the over the hill gang. That was football! :D
Remember when Nitschke used to actually cry during interviews about being picked on in the locker room when he whined about getting knocked silly because the game was too rough? And Unitas got thrown out of that game with Dallas for celebrating in the end zone?

Growing up in Upstate NY, Giants football was required viewing. We also had the pleasure of watching Fighting Irish games before the Giants game. One of the guys I liked watching was the fella YA replaced. Good ole #42, Charlie Conerly; who was the official Marlboro man for a few years. #16 was Paul Horning, # 81 Andy Robusteli , # 70 Sam Huff, # 85 Del Schofner, # 44 (IIRC) Kyle Rote, & # 29 Alex Webster, and even a few games played with # 45 Emlem Tunnell. I remember when face masks came into vogue. I don't remember very much fool's play in the end zones after TD's, just good football.
