Whatever happened to common sense, let alone common courtesy?

My 75 y/o dad (who could be Santa with his white hair and beard) was carded at Safeway in California. He was not amused.

Here's my question, are the carding people for an age verification, or are they doing it for some sort of head count?

If only it was as difficult to prove you were eligible to vote. Trust me I look way beyond the legal age and I am always carded, some places even scan my DL. I do know if it's the law to do this but I know the person that has to do it is probably just doing their job.

I know Legion liquors outside of Ft Campbell cards everyone that comes thru their doors, and if you don't have ID you can't even stay in the store.

It's a corporate overreaction to lawsuits.

But I was told to card everyone. If you served alcohol to someone who was clearly over 21, and for some reason a LEO/ALE in the bar asked for that person's ID and they didn't have it, the bar was liable.

Doesn't sound like this was the case here. Just the cashier making a cruel joke. Shame on her.

This is patently ridiculous. I was actually carded in Martin's the other day. The woman at the register was older than me, so I wasn't offended.:p

The ABC law in VA is pretty clear on the subject:

Q: Are you required to have an ID to purchase alcoholic beverages?

A: No; however, alcoholic beverages may not be sold to persons under 21.
Identification may be required.

I added the color and italics for emphasis.
