A collection of 1,500 famous paintings looted by the Nazis in the '30s and '40s and worth $1.35 billion were found in an apartment in Munich. The man keeping the works of art in his home would sell one whenever he needed money. He was only caught with the stolen paintings after he was audited by the German tax authorities.

FWIW - the "Monuments Men" is a good read on the art looting issue of WW2 and there will be a film on it being released in the next couple of months.
