I was standing in morning formation at Ft. Lewis, WA when our First Sergeant told us about the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beruit, Lebanon. 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers died in the blast. 58 French troops were also killed in another attack that day.

I knew those soldiers. I just completed IMPOC and several of the instructors were sent to Lebanon to field test the new mortars and counter-mortar radar.
They were great instructors. RIP

One of the "we may never know if it could have been prevented."
My boss was in Lebanon as a marine. He was one of the ones who had to respond.
To me, the most unforgivable thing about the whole affair is that the Marines on guard where not allowed to have ammunition in their firearms.

I was in Germany when it happened. We had to pull Guard Duty for a while, they gave us A magazine with five rounds in it wired up with a lead seal. Shortly afterwards, the big concrete blocks went up in front of the Front Gate at Rivers Barracks.
