Lost in Time: Groovy Afghanistan

http://www.messynessychic.com/2013/06/10/lost-in-time-groovy-afghanistan/

"A cautionary tale of a vibrant and thriving culture lost in time, these photographs collected on a community Facebook page in Afghanistan are likely to leave you in disbelief. The country we’re so often shown today is comparable to a broken medieval society, but not so long ago, the barren landscape was dotted with stylish buildings, women wore pencil skirts and teenagers shopped at record stores.

As you browse the photos that capture progress, hope and that rock’n'roll spirit in the air, keep in mind the implications of what happened to this culture in just a few decades................"

My Grandfather and Grandmother visited there way back when and raved how beautiful it was. They even had slides of the trip as I recall.

Please remember, some of that decline is also at the hands of the Soviet Union in trying to turn it into a puppet state, this weakened to the point where even radical Islam was preferable over the invaders.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that Islam shares the blame for the demise of that once beautiful country, but the Soviet Union started the ball rolling.

In the late 60's Kabul was a destination for the rich and groovy...out of the way but 'modern' in a way. Drugs rock and roll etc.
Hard to imagine ain't it.

I agree with you about the USSR. Colonial rule also is a factor because of where the boundries were drawn, divided some groups and forced others to "live" together when traditionally whey did not get along. Sixth century savages just made any return to civility almost impossible.
