After Islamic gunmen attacked the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, the collective reaction from the US media was to speculate whether such terror could happen here, as if a jihadist assault on a mall inside America had never before been tried.
CNN was typical: “Can it happen here? Yes, say security experts, but it hasn’t.”
News flash: it did.
On the evening of Feb. 12, 2007, a young Muslim man walked into the Trolley Square mall in Salt Lake City with a pistol-grip, 12-gauge shotgun and a 38-caliber revolver and opened fire on shoppers, killing five and wounding four others, including a pregnant woman.
Police say he “sought to kill as many people as possible.” He had a backpack full of ammunition, enough firepower to massacre dozens of innocent people. But fortunately, an off-duty cop returned fire and eventually, with the help of other police, put an end to the terrorist’s life and grand plans.....

“Clearly, he had some religious beliefs,” Fuhrman said, “but just because someone has religious beliefs doesn’t mean anything is a terrorist act.”

Naw......couldn't be

The British are saying that they have thwarted a Kenyan style attack from happening. Details are "sketchy" right now about how close the four arrested were from carrying out the attack.

I have a sneaky feeling in my gizzard that we may see something like the Kenyan attack here before the year is out.

Remember .... only 70 more shopping days until Christmas. (Unless of course Barry cancels it)

Official: 4 men arrested in UK were plotting attack similar Westgate Mall assault

LONDON — British law enforcement agencies averted a plot to orchestrate a large-scale terror attack similar to the assault on Kenya’s Westgate mall, an official said Monday.

Police were questioning four men in their 20s on suspicion of terrorism after they were detained Sunday in pre-planned, intelligence-led raids.

A British security official said the men were planning a shooting spree akin to the Westgate attack in Nairobi, in which at least 67 people died.

The official — who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media on the record — said it was not clear how advanced the planning was but that any attack was not imminent.

Metropolitan Police did not identify the suspects or say what, if any, charges, they may face. But in a series of statements, the force said the men were all British nationals between the ages of 25 and 29, with roots in Turkey, Pakistan, Algeria and Azerbaijan.

The force confirmed that the London police firearms unit took part in the arrests. British police rarely carry weapons and their involvement suggested concern that men might have been armed.

Dramatic CCTV footage has emerged of one of the arrests, in which counter-terror police are seen tackling a suspect on the street in an upscale west London neighborhood.

Elsewhere, police fired special ammunition — aimed at breaching doors or bursting tires — to stop a car near the Tower of London, and arrested two 25-year-old men. Another suspect was arrested in southeast London.

Officers were searching six locations and two vehicles in London following the arrests.

I have been thinking that for years and knock on wood nothing has happened.

I always remind wife to stay vigilant if she decides to head to the mall.

Me, I have not entered a mall in years, probably close to 10 years because I do not enjoy the feedlot atmosphere.
