The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close a host of popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown.

The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.

The agency also reopened a boat launch Wednesday at Wyalusing State Park on the Mississippi River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service closed the launch on Tuesday because it was on federal land.

But in a sign of defiance, the DNR removed the barricades at the landing, saying it had the legal authority to operate the launch under a 1961 agreement with the federal government.

Fascinating. Isn't Wisconsin one of those "Blue States"? (Good on them!)

Fascinating. Isn't Wisconsin one of those "Blue States"? (Good on them!)Sir, it is the most wham-boozling demographic you never wanna see. 2 major metro areas (with hands out, palms up) who could elect current POTUS x2. And the same state fills both pieces of the legislature and the governor's chair with conservatives. (Governor x2 also cause he got a bigger majority in the recall than he was elected by.) Toss out US Sen. Russ Feingold and elect TP-favorite Ron Johnson; then turn around & elect Tammy Baldwin to the Senate also. It's the dangdest thing.

But once you get out of downtown Milwaukee or the Centers of Academia & Hankie-Wringing in Madison, it's pretty much folks just want to be let alone.

I'm getting a big hoot out of Liberals reactions to all this.

(and in the spirit of being fair - the conservatives who've flipped)

When you had the OWS protesters the libs were totally against the "jackbooted thugs" moving in to clean them out.

Now with the government shutdown they are bending over backwards to blame the fencing in of the monuments on the Republicans and any move to get over the fence is a breach of law and order that needs to be dealt with.

Having a lib say "just following orders" cracks me up.

What I don't understand is that the public apears to be letting themselves be locked out of public lands. I can't do anything myself, but it seems like a great opportunity for The People to assert themselves. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a vet locked out of your own memorial... Oh wait, This is why DHS purchased the MRAP's!

I don't see this as a lib vs conservative thing, I see this as a whole gov't failiure. I hear the cry of vote them all out, yet another politcal critter, who passed muster through the establishment will take the vacancy. No win there.

I also see this as a reflection of the movement of media towards becoming confrontational; look at the MSM, sports shows, reality TV, etc. If it's emotionally charged, dramatic, shouted, or in your face, it won't catch the ratings.

Confrontation is coming.

Arresting a WWII vet would stir the wrath of the people.
A less sympathetic victim will be used as a test case.

Shutting down open air public venues sure seems petty to me. I'd like to see the emails of who is ordering this......

It's all about following one of the prime directives, which is make it as painful or exasperating as possible.

Million Vet March on Memorials

I'm not a Facebooker (or whatever they call such a person), but this comes to me related to the above:

The message:
About

Join fellow veterans at the war memorials in Washington DC on Sunday October 13th at 9 AM. These memorials belong to the American veterans and people!

Description

We are all military brats, current and former military spouses and some veterans. We cannot express how utterly disappointed we were that our Greatest Generation were being used as political pawns in the ongoing government shutdown and budget crisis. This should never be the case.

We do not care what political leanings you may be; be it liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent or whatever. The actions of the U.S. government this week with regard to barricading and shutting down the World War II Memorial to veterans, that may or may not be on their last trip to Washington DC, is a despicable act of cowardice.

Veterans this week were unwillingly pitted as pawns in this crisis. We feel that this should never be the case. This is why we will go to Congress after the budget crisis and ask for a bill to be introduced that would prevent any member of the government from closing our memorials down to any American, except for maintenance purposes. In the meantime, we will have our March in Washington DC on October 13th! Our veterans deserve that!

Many in our group have decided that enough is enough. We are Americans. We are proud of our heritage and our service. As all of us were military brats and spouses, we have served in some form or another our entire lives. This is our way of life. We will not stand by and let the U.S. government dishonor the legacy of sacrifice of the generations before us. It is time to make a stand! We hope that you will join us in our peaceful protest against anti-American policies.

Mutiny: Retired Navy captain plans blockade to protest closure of Florida waters (http://www.examiner.com/article/mutiny-retired-navy-captain-plans-blockade-to-protest-closure-of-florida-waters)

Some extracts below.

October 7, 2013

“As you are well aware,” wrote Retired U.S. Navy, Senior Chief Geoff Ross -- in a message posted by Fred Brownbill on Save America Foundation Sunday -- the federal government “has illegally and unconstitutionally closed state fishing and navigational waters within the 12 mile boundary of state waters.”
...
Citing Examiner’s report from Saturday – “Feds close Florida oceans: Florida Bay Charter owner says ‘they’re killing us'” -- Ross is now calling for “every charter boat fisherman across Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama (who is able) to get his or her vessels ready for underway for a coordinated mission to recover your stolen rights as Americans.”

I want 1000 to 2000 charter boats filling the water way that was closed and confiscated illegally by President Obama under his White House order. DEFY IT ! Its illegal.

“I’m going to fill my waterway with boats,” Ross told Examiner Monday. “Charter boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, I don’t care.”
“I’ve done this before,” Ross said.

On Nov. 7, 2009, more than 100 boats -- including about 70 charter boats – gathered to form a blockade of Destin's East Pass in Fort Walton, Fla. to protest the closure of "snapper season on September 20, 2009 and the amberjack season on October 24, 2009” by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The flotilla -- organized by the Destin Charter Boat Association – was assisted by Ross.

Ross told Examiner that the event was also attended by a couple of Coast Guard vessels.

“But they didn’t try to stop us at all,” Ross said. “They knew I wasn’t going to stand down.”

“The Florida Constitution is very clear in that ownership of all the all navigable waters in the State is in the people as individual State Citizens in their united Sovereignty,” Ross wrote Sunday.

Conversation in the Office this morning is that Dear Leader is pushing buttons to invoke misery on specific groups, so he can get a response to further his calls of DHS labeling us all as potential terrorists.

Dear Leader and his ilk want a reaction. I don't think he is prepared for the reaction.

We want to start a numbers board, maybe Vegas style, to see what the odds are for every action Barry and his minions take.

Sounds good, I'm hungry. (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2013/10/08/2013-battle-yorktown-restaurant-owner-defies-feds/) :D
-----------------------------
“I am now occupying the building at this time.”

And with that one decision – restaurant owner Glenn Helseth joined the ranks of Americans who’ve decided to defy the strong-arm tactics of the National Park Service.

For the past 11 years Helseth and his wife have operated the Carrot Tree Kitchens Restaurant inside the historic Cole Digges House in Yorktown, Va.

At least 20 of Helseth's longtime employees are facing unemployment. They can’t make rent and some are faced with choosing between buying food or buying medicine.

The National Park Service owns and operates the building. So when the government shut down on Oct. 1, the Helseths were given 48 hours to pack up and move out.

The couple also owns a restaurant on Jamestown Island. They had to close that restaurant after the National Park Service blocked access to the island.

“We’re upset on a number of levels – not the least of which is the impending financial doom that Carrot Tree faces,” Glenn told me.

At least 20 of his longtime employees are facing the unemployment line. They can’t make rent and some are faced with choosing between buying food or buying medicine.

So Glenn decided it was time to take some action – and at 11 a.m. ET he reopened the Carrot Tree Kitchens Restaurant – in defiance of the federal government.

“I intend to serve everybody that wants to dine with me,” he said. “I don’t intend to close my doors. I am occupying Carrot Tree Yorktown.”

Glenn said he is well aware that he is breaking the law – but he told me enough is enough.

“I’m serving Brunswick stew, ham biscuits and carrot cake,” he said. “If that gets me put in jail, I’m going to jail.”
