"(Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a shopping mall in Nairobi on Saturday killing at least 15 people in what Kenya's government said might be a terrorist attack, and sending scores fleeing into shops, a cinema and onto the streets in search of safety...."
The story has a slide show that shows mostly the police is action.
When I first glanced at them it was hard to tell they were the police.

If this is valid information, and US citizens of Somali extract are known to go 'home' and carry out Jihad, then what is the reaction of the community in the US?
An outpouring of dissent against Jihad focused on non combatants? A serious effort to instruct the Muslim US Somali youth?
No, the mothers/fathers of the slain jihadi's will quietly take comfort in the fact that their dead sons are now Shaheed's....Holy Warriors promised heaven.
Local Imam's will offer comments at Friday prayer where the dead will be cast in a positive light thru reading verses that support becoming a Shaheed.
There will be no effort to either curb this type of expat activity or privately admonish it.
The 'moderate' Muslims will go about their business neither supporting nor decrying these acts.

Another Somali jihadist group doing this same thing is Al-Ittihad Al-Islami. A Somali in San Antonio, Texas was arrested in March 2008 on immigration charges. From June 2006 to March 2008, he earned at least $3,000 for every single person he snuck across the border, making up to $75,000 in a single day.
He confirmed that he knew exactly what he was doing when he brought Al-Ittihad Al-Islami members into the U.S. His sentencing memo said “he believed they would fight against the U.S. if the jihad moved from overseas locations to the U.S. mainland.”

She is the wife of Germaine Lindsay, a man who blew himself up on July 7, 2005, at London's King’s Cross subway station killing 26 people. At the time, Lewthwaite, denied having any prior knowledge of the attack. Shortly thereafter, she became a fugitive.
Lewthwaite, the 29-year-old daughter of a soldier, hails from Banbridge, County Down, Ireland. She converted to Islam as a teenager, and according to British rmedia reports, has three children with whom she has been on the run.
In December of 2011, Kenyan police raided a two-room apartment in Mombasa, Kenya. They found chemicals similar to those used in the July 7, 2005 bombing in London. Lewthwaite was identified as the person who rented the apartment but she wasn't captured.
However, Jermaine Grant, who is British, was captured at the Mombasa apartment. He faces charges of conspiring to explode devices to hurt civilians, according to Kenyan police. Grant told police that he was working for Lewthwaite. She faces the same charges as Grant and another man later arrested trying to flee the country.
In March, the London Daily Telegraph reported that Lewthwaite and Fouad Manswab were plotting to free Grant, who's trial was set to begin Sept. 23 (today) in Mombasa. "We know that Fouad is in touch with Samantha Lewthwaite, and they were planning to rescue their accomplice," said Jacob Ondari, the deputy public prosecutor, at the time.

We in South Africa have for a long time had a significant indigenous Muslim population. They are mainly traders and business people and have historically been very peaceful except in the Cape where they are big into drugs and gangsterism.
In the last three years, three huge mosques have been built in Johannesburg using foreign money. We have so far not had any terrorist incidents but the Muslim invasion is coming south with many Somali's and Ethiopian Muslims being added to our Indian and Dutch East Indian Muslims. In some ways, the thought of Sharia Law is attractive in our out-of-control crime situation, but it will never catch on with our natives.

Planet Hollywood seemed to be a commercial incident. I don't remember a synagogue being hit? We did of course have many terrorist incidents perpetrated by Nelson Mandela's ANC and MK before they took power, but I was writing of Muslim terrorism.

No official confirmation on death yet. She has previously traveled on a forged passport and has stated that she will raise her children to be terrorists.
Interpol, perhaps in an abundance of caution, issued the alert.
They can, of course, withdraw the alert when DNA or other high confidence confirmation occurs.

As anti-Muslim feelings are pretty high at present, I began thinking that history is beginning to repeat itself. An enemy from the East has emerged again. An unprovoked and sudden attack on America took place. The enemy has no regard for the normal rules of war or the sacred nature of life, either his own or his enemies.
The attacks on Pearl Harbor and on the Twin Towers are similar. No declaration of war, no warning and no respect for civilian lives. The Kamikazi suicide pilots are again similar to the suicide bombers of Islam today. They have no respect for life. Their own or anyone else's. As the Americans found in WW2, there is no way you can deal with an enemy such as this. The Japanese were happy to die for their Emperor, and were happy to take anyone with them. Todays Muslim Jihadist feels the same way about dying for Allah.
What to do?
The Americans came to the conclusion in 1945, that the only way to deal with such an enemy is to show them what total annihilation looks like. Two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki stopped the war in its tracks. What will it take to tame the Muslims?

Four men believed to have been involved in the deadly shopping centre attack in Nairobi last month have been named. The Kenyan military said Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and Umayr - shown in new CCTV footage - were killed during the standoff.
Kenya said previously 10-15 militants had been involved, but the police chief says the figure may now be four to six.
The al-Shabab group said it carried out the attack on the Westgate mall on 21 September, leaving at least 67 dead.The al-Qaeda-linked group said the attack was in retaliation for Kenya's military involvement in Somalia.
The naming of the men came as CCTV footage was aired showing four attackers calmly walking through a room in the mall holding machine guns. Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Maj Emmanuel Chirchir told Reuters news agency: "I confirm these were the terrorists; they all died in the raid."
Reuters quoted Maj Chirchir as saying that al-Sudani was an "experienced fighter" from Sudan and was believed to be the leader of the group. Maj Chirchir said Nabhan was a Kenyan of Arab origin and al-Kene a Somali linked to al-Shabab. Further details about Umayr had not yet been verified, he said.
A Kenyan security analyst told the BBC that at least two of the names would be familiar to the Kenyan intelligence services. Kenyan police chief David Kimaiyo told Kenya's KTN television station it was now believed that four to six gunmen had carried out the attack, not 10 to 15. "None of them managed to escape from the building after the attack," he said.
Mr Kimaiyo also said that wanted British woman Samantha Lewthwaite had not been involved. "We have also established that she was not part of the attackers in the building. There was no woman," he said. Ms Lewthwaite, 29, is the widow of one of the four suicide bombers who attacked London on 7 July 2005.
Kenya had earlier said five attackers were killed in the security operation and that nine people were in custody.
The BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse in Nairobi says the latest CCTV footage is from a limited part of the complex and, with some eyewitnesses reporting a two-pronged attack, it is too early to say definitively how many gunmen were in the building.
In addition to the 67 people killed in the attack, a further 39 are still missing, according to the Kenyan Red Cross.
Al-Shabab is banned as a terrorist group by both the US and the UK and is believed to have between 7,000 and 9,000 fighters.
Its members are fighting to create an Islamic state in Somalia.
About 4,000 Kenyan troops were sent to Somalia in October 2011 to help pro-government forces end two decades of violence, with clan-based warlords and Islamist militants all battling for control of the country.
On Saturday, Islamist fighters in southern Somalia said Western forces had launched a night-time raid on one of their bases.
No-one has admitted the attack. US and French special forces have carried out raids in Somalia in recent years.
It is not clear whether the raid was linked to Westgate.

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Navy SEAL team targeted a senior leader of the Shabab militant group in a raid on his seaside villa in the Somali town of Baraawe on Saturday, American officials said, in response to a deadly attack on a Nairobi shopping mall for which the group had claimed responsibility.
The SEAL team stealthily approached the beachfront house by sea, firing on the unidentified target in a predawn gunbattle that was the most significant raid by American troops on Somali soil since commandos killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, a Qaeda mastermind, near the same town four years ago.
The Shabab leader was believed to have been killed in the firefight, but the SEALS were forced to withdraw before that could be confirmed, a senior American official said. Such operations by American forces are rare because they carry a high risk, and indicate that the target was considered a high priority. Baraawe, a small port town south of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, is known as a gathering place for the Shabab’s foreign fighters.
“The Baraawe raid was planned a week and a half ago,” said an American security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity about a classified operation. “It was prompted by the Westgate attack,” he added, referring to the mall in Nairobi that was overrun by militants two weeks ago, leaving more than 60 dead.
Witnesses in the area described a firefight lasting over an hour, with helicopters called in for air support. A senior Somali government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the raid, saying, “The attack was carried out by the American forces and the Somali government was pre-informed about the attack.”
A spokesman for the Shabab, which is based in Somalia, said that one of its fighters had been killed in an exchange of gunfire but that the group had beaten back the assault. American official initially reported that they had seized the Shabab leader, but later backed off of that account. The deadly assault on the Westgate shopping mall was a stark reminder of the power and reach of the Islamist group, which had a series of military setbacks in recent years and was widely viewed as weakened.
The F.B.I. sent dozens of agents to Nairobi after the shopping mall siege to help Kenyan authorities with the investigation. United States officials fear that the Shabab could attempt a similar attack on American soil, perhaps employing several of the group’s Somali-American recruits.
Another United States official said it was still unclear whether any Americans were involved in the Westgate mall episode, though there were growing indications that fewer attackers took part in the siege than the 10 to 15 militants the government had previously announced.
A spokesman for the Kenyan military said Saturday that it had identified four of the attackers from surveillance footage. Local news media reported their names as Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and a man known only as Umayr. “I can confirm that those are the names of the terrorists,” said Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir, the spokesman.
The footage, broadcast on Kenyan television on Friday night, showed four of the attackers moving about the mall with cool nonchalance, no hint in their demeanor that they had stormed a shopping center and massacred dozens of people, much less that they feared an imminent counterassault from Kenyan security services.
One loitered in the grocery checkout aisle, talking on his cellphone. Another slouched in a storage room like a worker on break.
At least one of the four men, Mr. Nabhan, is Kenyan, and believed to be related to Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, the Qaeda mastermind killed four years ago near Baraawe.
The elder Mr. Nabhan was a suspect in the bombing of an Israeli hotel on the Kenyan coast in 2002 and the attacks on the American Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
He was one of the most wanted Islamic militants in Africa when American commandos killed him in September 2009 in an audacious daytime attack. Four military helicopters shot at two trucks rumbling through the desert, killing six foreign fighters, including Mr. Nabhan, and three Somali members of the Shabab.
Mr. Nabhan was of Yemeni descent but was born in Mombasa, on Kenya’s coast. Kenyan news media reported that the younger Mr. Nabhan also came from Mombasa, and was among the Kenyans who traveled to Somalia to train and fight with the Shabab.
Matt Bryden, the former head of the United Nations Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea, said the tactics used in the Westgate attack were similar to those used by the Shabab in a number of operations in Somalia this year. But he also said that local help was needed to pull off an attack on that scale, and that several of the men identified as taking part in the attack were connected to group’s Kenyan affiliate, known as Al Hijra.
“We should certainly expect Al Hijra and Al Shabab to try again,” Mr. Bryden said. “And we should expect them to have the capacity to do so.”
The raid on Saturday morning appeared to have been intended to blunt those capabilities. A witness in Baraawe said the house was known as a place where senior foreign commanders stayed, though he could not say whether they were there at the time of the attack.
The witness said 12 well-trained Shabab fighters scheduled for a mission abroad were staying there at the time of the assault. He confirmed that a Somali man was killed in the attack.
There was some confusion as to exactly what happened before sunrise on Saturday. Witnesses described the SEAL team using silencers in the initial attack, but a loud firefight afterward. Before confirmation that an American SEAL team was behind the attack, a Shabab spokesman said British and Turkish forces were involved, which both countries immediately denied.

U.S. confirms death of al Shabaab leader Godane in Somalia strike

(Reuters) - The Pentagon confirmed on Friday that Ahmed Abdi Godane, a leader of the al Shabaab Islamist group, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Somalia this week, calling it a "major symbolic and operational loss" for the al Qaeda-affiliated militants.
Since taking charge of al Shabaab in 2008, Godane had restyled the group as a global player in the al Qaeda network, carrying out bombings and suicide attacks in Somalia and elsewhere in the region, including the Sept. 21, 2013, attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that killed 67 people.
Godane publicly claimed responsibility for the Westgate attack, saying it was revenge for Kenyan and Western involvement in Somalia and noting its proximity to the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
His death leaves a gap in al Shabaab's leadership and was seen as posing the biggest challenge to the group's unity since it emerged as a fighting force eight years ago.

Somalia's Islamic extremist rebels, al-Shabaab, named Abu Ubeid Ahmed Omar to be their new leader following the killing of previous leader by a U.S. airstrike, said a commander of the group.
As anti-Muslim feelings are pretty high at present, I began thinking that history is beginning to repeat itself. An enemy from the East has emerged again. An unprovoked and sudden attack on America took place. The enemy has no regard for the normal rules of war or the sacred nature of life, either his own or his enemies.
The attacks on Pearl Harbor and on the Twin Towers are similar. No declaration of war, no warning and no respect for civilian lives. The Kamikazi suicide pilots are again similar to the suicide bombers of Islam today. They have no respect for life. Their own or anyone else's. As the Americans found in WW2, there is no way you can deal with an enemy such as this. The Japanese were happy to die for their Emperor, and were happy to take anyone with them. Todays Muslim Jihadist feels the same way about dying for Allah.
What to do?
The Americans came to the conclusion in 1945, that the only way to deal with such an enemy is to show them what total annihilation looks like. Two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki stopped the war in its tracks. What will it take to tame the Muslims?
I'm wondering if the rinse and repeat of islamic radicalism isn't as much a repeat of fanatical Japanese imperialism but a repeat analog of global communism.
I remember as a kid that a common opinion was that all communists were perfectly aligned and out to get us capitalists in a very aggressive and kinetic sense.
But as it turned out the communists often hated each other more than they hated us capitalists. They were not particularly well aligned/arrayed/synchronized against us(Tet, Pueblo/Walker, Blue House Raid example notwithstanding).
Even their successes in places like Rhodesia/Zimbabwe was a highly competitive, rather than a complementary communist effort in a 3 sided war that many thought was only 2 sided. Russia and China were each out to win at the other's expense.
Nixon going to China leveraged a seam/rift between the two biggest communist powers a few years beforehand.
I kinda see the same thing today.
Islam has a number of very substantial rifts(Shia/Sunni) as well as countless regional/local rifts(we are seeing a few now with ISIS).
Personally, I think every effort should be made to exploit those rifts and seams within Islam to encourage it to eat itself, but taking into account potentially malignant long term 2nd/3rd order effects that impact energy supply.

Sadly, another comparison I see with "islam being the new communism" is the genuine threat represented by the non-kinetic UW slice of the Cold War where the highly toxic pollution from communist efforts to undermine the capitalist west seem to have festered.
To me it looks like 25 years since the Berlin Wall fell, the oversimplistic answer everyone seems to believe is that the "US/West won the Cold War".
I think a more realistic answer is that the US/West decisively won the biggest battle of the Cold War to date, but got dosed with some polonium.
Everyone seemed to focus on the temporary victory they thought was permanent, without bothering to check if we were wounded in the multi-decade long contact.
I'm not so much worried about the kinetic threat posed by islam as I am the non-kinetic UW "long game" secondary islamic infection magnified by the weakness coming from that dose of communist polonium.
