That was hilarious!
The funny part is that I have read civil war letters and thought the same thing!
I actually met my wife in Germany, enroute to A-Stan and we actually got to know each other by email and chat. I always tried to make sure I always used correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as she has a Masters Degree and I'm just a HS grad, who's HS Spanish grades were usually better than my HS English grades. I learned a lot about grammar and punctuation during that time and married a wonderful woman all thanks to war time correspondence!

My wife gave me a book one year called "Grace under Fire". It has letters from the Revolutionary period to modern day. You can very clearly see the transition to how people used to think and what mattered more to them.
The letters also tend to get progressively shorter as generations move on. The only thing that occurred to me after finishing the book is the thought that what I had read was a copy of a physical letter. Something someone spent a good deal of time and consideration on.
Today with email, texts, tweets, and facebook much of that wartime history is lost forever in the abyss and it is not something our grandchildren or great grandchildren will find buried in the attic one day. We mine as well have all become anonymous to history.
