Its all about fairness.
"Pentagon officials say it’s about fairness, not generosity. Only 13 states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriages, creating a hardship for U.S. servicemembers stationed in many parts of the world."
It strikes me as sort of discriminatory.

So when did the military decide "fair" mattered? And, since this is no doubt paid leave, what justification is their for expending tax payer dollars that do not contribute to readiness.
If John and Paul love each other so damn much, let them use their own leave--just like everyone else.

But they're not just like everyone else. They're special. And the system must compensate them for the discrimination they've suffered.

I'm with you; if I had to spend leave to get married (twice, talk about failure to learn from past mistakes!) they should too. Unfortunately; as we all know, some animals are more equal than others.
Old Army counter point I heard often...

One statement in the article that was odd...
"Travel to the states that allow same-sex marriages is a significant problem for troops stationed in places such as Texas or South Korea." Really?
I also have to ask about the hetero service members stationed in a far flung location that might want to get married to their chosen one who resides back in the States. Seems like the distance to allow for their marriage is difficult for them as well. But I am assuming they aren't given uncharged leave. Makes no sense.

No they do not. That is the problem with this. If they want to give free leave then give it to all.

So......When they want to divorce do they get leave to go to a state that recognizes same sex marriages? I'm assuming that can't happen in a state that doesn't recognize them....

One other effect is that, like other areas where TPTB want to assuage their own deep-rooted feelings, granting this creates an UN-equal class and marginalizes those who have, ostensibly, been "harmed."
They never learn.
