According to my wife, who checks in on a lot of Facebook military sites, today has been a night of the long knives. Military pages are being deleted en mass. Has anyone else seen this and can confirm?
I haven't noticed, but I'll keep my eye on it.
US-Infantrydotcom posted the following on their FB page-"No, we haven't been shut down and yes, we are aware of pages being shut down across Facebook for various reasons. We will do our best to avoid that."
One commenter stated that 9 military related pages had been deleted.
Someone on my timeline had a link to this Facebook page, that had been taken down (they have since recreated it, but you can read the comments in that page's timeline that they were taken down...)

So what are the sites that have been taken down?

Has Facebook made any statements ref this? Or is this someone hacking and taking them down.

At first, it was believed by many that it was due to a politician:

However, it's turned out that some people have taken it upon themselves to report the sites for posting nudity and pornography. One person doing the reporting was a military wife who found pictures of women in bikinis and such offensive, and there was an entire site which prides itself on being a bunch of POGs that got in on it. The "Pogworks" site has claimed responsibility and is going through and reporting the newly created replacement pages.
What I'm gathering is that the reporting would have gone fairly unnoticed until Congresswoman Speier came out with her statements whereas now Facebook is taking these reports by users much more seriously.
Oh Lord next thing you know folks will be complaining about afchic's avatar.

I am shocked that there is offending matter on the internet. Shocked I tell you. Who knew?

Tip of the spear was taken down. It was dam funny while it lasted. There has been an explosion of make fun of ourselves military pages popping up. But most are definitely NSFW.
Hey it's a good thing, right? I'm not comparing my firm to the military but tons of salesguys styling themselves as "marketing gurus" are demanding I setup a facebook, twitter, google+, etc. accounts to promote myself on the web. I see these same "gurus" successfully convincing local police depts and even active military to have a social media presence. I can't see any good in it. Is some guy on facebook all the sudden to discover the Signal Corps while looking at bikini pics of mutual friends and decide to join the army? Is some would-be criminal going to laugh at "silly photos" posted by the local SWAT team and decide not to rob a 711 and kill somebody because of that tweet (or is it twit) showing them police are just people too?
Maybe the forces that are causing military facebook site to go black are nefarious and the result of hackers/Jane Fonda. But ultimately, we need to remove this crap from social media. If Bob in Idaho can see soldiers' families' Christmas photos and addresses then Akhmad en route from Saudi Arabia to A-stan can see it to on his cellphone. The problems this crap can cause is not worth the small feeling of "joy" seeing your buddies carrying their gear kicking in doors online. Keep your pics of your teammates and family private. Show them to people you generally trust on specific websites, or through old-fashioned email. Social media gives everyone their 15 min of fame but it also opens them up to hosts of problems not worth it.
