VIDEO: Cargo plane crashes in Afghanistan, killing 7 Americans

CNN) – A cargo plane crashed in Afghanistan killing all seven crew members on board Monday.

All seven were U.S. citizens, the cargo carrier National Airlines said.

Video shot from a dashboard camera from a vehicle near the airfield showed the Boeing 747-400 taking off from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The aircraft nose pitches up heavily and the plane appears to stall before falling to the ground. (Video of the crash is below – some readers may find this disturbing).

The cargo plane was en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“This was a purely cargo flight and no passengers were aboard,” a company statement said. “Cargo consisted of vehicles and routine general cargo.”

National specializes in moving freight for the military and businesses, as well as charter passenger service in the Middle East.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

But Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said his group shot down the aircraft and that “several foreign soldiers were killed.”

That claim could not be immediately verified. But in the past, the Taliban has exaggerated casualty figures.

“This is a devastating loss for our family and we’ll work diligently with authorities to find the cause,” National Airlines President Glen Joerger said in the statement.

“Our focus at this time is on the family members of those we’ve lost, and on assisting the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) and Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority in their investigations.”

These are hard for me to watch as you know people are going to (have already) die(d). Makes your stomach turn.

It will be interesting to see what the cause was. We're they required to do a SAM climb out?

I don't have many civvie flight hours, but I'd GUESS a major Centre of Gravity(CG) shift in cargo causing the aircraft to go unintentionally unstable.

That was just horrible to watch.

Or a burst updraft combined with the combat climb out (my apologies at any latter terminology sna-fu) and swept wings.

That was gut wrenching to watch.

RIP.

Not a pretty picture at all. Cargo shifting within the aircraft is among the things to consider. The video coverage shows an aircraft stalled in the air. This suggests that the aircraft may have lost lift. I do not know the altitude of the runway, nor the rate of climb the aircraft was attempting.

May all souls on board, Rest In God's Own Peace.

Word we are getting is it was carrying a load of HMMVVs and the load shifted causing the stall. Can't even imagine the horror of those last seconds.
