Interesting article. Whenever the WaPo puts one of these out, reading the comments section is a very instructive endeavor to see the clearly delineated mindsets of the left and right...

Pay the overdue rent, cellphone bill, or tattoo parlor bill...
Is this really a difficult decision?
Wonder how many struggling to buy groceries have cable tv?
If they have a car, how much did it cost?
Poverty isn't so much caused by an inability to earn as it is an inability to prioritize spending.

Our standard of living is so high people believe those things are a right

That's the "money shot" right there...
For Rebecka and Jourie:
First kid their senior year in high school and then not learning from that and actually doubling down and having another one...
$110 cell phone bill, when they could buy "pay as you go" disposable phones
$75 tattoo parlor bill...WTF? Guess their matching "Livin' la vida loca" tattoos were more important than their kids eating...
A car with a $360 a month lease payment at 18% interest...
“Damn it!” Rebecka said again, racing around the store, oblivious to her own list, picking up anything that looked healthy or filling and dropping it into the cart.
People like this making a succession of shitty life choices and mismanaging their finances putting them in a persistent death spiral and cycle of poverty and dependence on the government to bail them out in perpetuity...

Reckless spending - perhaps most welfare recipients have never had anyone explain budgeting (or they don't think it's important).
After all, the government will always be there, they will always give me 'my' money.

The Democratic Party's wet dream. I don't know how you get people who live this lifestyle to understand there is a better way of living.
It may be a better way of living, but it isn't an easier way.

Our standard of living is so high people believe those things are a right
Isn't that the truth.
Only in America does poverty mean two cars, cable tv, cell phone and two full tattoo sleeves. I read a report recently where they are trying to redefine poverty to mean those earning below a certain percentage of the mean salary. It used to mean not being able to afford the basics for life, now it means not earning more than enough....
Some interesting visuals regarding the fairly recent - but dramatic food stamp increase issue at links/blog below.
