1. If you want to gain weight or get fat.... become a lesbian! and
2. If the grants are averaged out through 2016, this study will cost somewhere around $4.56 million.....

After just returning from 2 days of intensive review and discussion of NIH proposals to provide effective counter measures to potential bio-terrorism threats (most of which were excellent with some very good proposal that will not be funded because of budget limitations) and spending the past 20 years developing new therapeutic strategies to address chronic diseases and cancer (with very little NIH support mind you), I cannot begin to comment on this without devolving into a F'n rant:mad:
MOO, the PI wrote a good grant application and sold the reviewer's on it's medical/sociological importance. I am more than a little skeptical that any new knowledge will come from this that can be used to solve the obesity problem.
Let me write the conclusion of this study. "This study found that there is a disproportionate and statistically significant number of of lesbian women that are morbidly obese as compared to age matched heterosexual women. This study also found that there is a disproportionate and statistically significant number of morbidly obese heterosexual men as compared to age matched gay men. This study found that gay men tended to be more "body-image" conscious (vane) than heterosexual men and lesbian women tended to be less so than heterosexual women. Other than these psychological factors, this study found no significant lifestyle or dietary factors to account for the differences in the BMI between groups."
There now! That didn't cost $1.5 M to state the obvious now did it?

Look, all they need to do is to hang out at the plaid shirt shop or lumberjack boot store and ask them why they're fat. they'll probably tell you it has somethin to do with the six pack of beer they slug every night and the insistence of a Vagitarian diet.
I know our government wastes our money, but the percentages and dollar amounts of research budgets annotated on the graphic in the link below is pure, unadulterated, in your face bullshit. Although it is dated for the 2009 timeframe, I know the waste has increased, not decreased.

Alluding to what PedOncoDoc mention earlier upstream, more of this money seems to be going to bullshit than actual beneficial research. According to the link I provided for the graphic, only a small portion went to important matters such as the USGS, CDC, transportation (roads), etcetera.
