Gentlemen,

Please forgive me if this is the wrong place to post my question, but I wasn't really sure where it would fit in. I'm currently recovering from a sports injury and plan on going 18x in the near future. In the interim I have an opportunity to pursue modeling (this is not a joke). My question is, would modeling negatively affect my being able to try for Special Forces? The only problem I can think of would be clearance issues. If anyone could shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I think the QPs here will forgive me if I answer part of this. No employment that is both legal and moral will prevent you from getting a security clearance, providing that it also does not indicate foreign allegiance. That's from a former S-2 for a Special Forces Group.

However, telling the guys on the team that you were a male model (should you be successful) ....... Others are better able to answer that, perhaps colorfully. :D

As a former Bn S2 NCOIC, that has processed a lot of security clearances, I agree, it should not pose a problem if the work is legal and moral.

But remember, once published, pictures are forever. You cannot undelete the internet.

Another concern would be that supposing I do well with modeling, pictures of me would be circulating throughout the internet. That would make it much easier to match up my face with a name. In other threads (http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20073&highlight=facebook) I've been reading that when pictures are circulating like that, such as facebook and myspace, it wont help during SFAS and once on a team. Seeing as how social media tends to be a means of letting others know how irresponsible one can be, I'm not sure if modeling would fall into the same category? To answer your question albeham, at this point I don't know if it would be with other men, women, or just alone; I'd have to pursue it further to find out. Thanks again gentlemen for shedding some light on the subject.

mofo308,
You will still get your clearance but you might not be chosen for the most classified of missions.

(The reason I went SF was because I could not be a model.....;))

One pitfall I noticed as my modeling career developed,,,

The fundamentals necessary to being a Quiet Professional directly counter those that are required to market, circulate, and establish a "name" in modeling. You may have to take a serious look at what it is you truly want to be be. If you think a Green Beret leads to glamor, think again.

One may argue that there are Green Berets that could model, one would never argue that there are models that could "Green Beret".

Of course, I never had the benefit of SEAL training, where I sometimes wonder if they don't offer a class in both.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Ha, ha... You used SEAL and class in the same sentence - No soup for you!

Modeling in and of itself wouldnt prevent you from trying. However the mindset of someone who desires to be a model is IMNSHO counter to what makes a good SF soldier.

If you want glamor look into something other than SF.

Modeling and Special Forces? Isn't one the antithesis of the other? Fluff vs. Substance?
