Lauren Silberman scheduled to be first woman participant at NFL regional scouting combine

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/lauren-silberman-scheduled-become-first-woman-participate-nfl-145824159--nfl.html

"If we're being completely honest, Lauren Silberman's odds of making a NFL team as its kicker are pretty much nonexistent.

However, the long-shot nature of her bid isn't stopping the 28-year-old New Yorker from becoming the first woman in history to register for an NFL regional scouting combine, which features players who weren't invited to the main combine currently being held in Indianapolis. Silberman will compete alongside college kickers in New Jersey on March 2 and 3 for the right to advance to a Dallas super-regional combine in April...................."

If a female is to make the NFL it would be as a kicker. Ever see a kicker tackle somebody?

I'll be interested to see the results of her 225lb bench for reps.

Female kicker's NFL tryout lasts all of 2 kicks

"FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Lauren Silberman lined up for a kick at NFL history, took a deep breath and booted the football.

It barely went anywhere, traveling 19 yards, and she grabbed at her right leg............"

If she was military and trying out for the Infantry a little TAC would have been forced to run out onto the field, pick up the football, run it 100 yards down the field, place it on the ground and jump up and down screaming "Look, Look she kicked it 119 yards" - and she would make the Infantry.

Hmm, let me think on the pink.

Her bench was probably on par with most of the other kickers... The whole thing was a sham, and probably took away from guys that were actually decent at kicking. Her first kick didn't make much further than the 50 yd. line? Hell, the center on most middle school teams can kick it that far. She'll probably write a book about her experience, make her rounds on all the morning talk shows and make her money. It was never about getting a fair chance, it was about her getting that 20 minutes of fame.

This politically correct madness has really gone too far. Feminists refuse to accept the fact that men and women are different. I’m not talking about metrosexuals. Not too much difference there. But if a ball is going to be kicked 60 yards on the gridiron or if a fastball is going to be hummed across the outside of the plate at 95 mph, it will come from the foot or arm of an hombre!
Sorry, feminazis, Mother Nature and reality don’t do PC!

I’m not saying womerns don’t have their place on the football field. They do…in those cute little cheerleader outfits shaking their pom poms. Being a cheerleader ain’t no job for a man.
And a womern football player in the NFL ain’t going to happen in God’s lifetime. Not without some Affirmative Action rule that requires NFL teams to suck with womern kickers who can’t kick the ball further than the line of scrimmage.

Saw this referenced about a woman who tried out to be a kicker in the NFL.
Couldn't help relating back to our situation in the military about women in combat positions.
Remember those "Virginia Slim" cigarette commercials -
"You've come a long way, baby!"

"You know, the distance wasn't there, but hopefully the scouts will notice my technique," she said. "It's not always length."

She's talking/thinking like a guy already!

Several sites report she first attempted to kick a football 2 weeks prior to the tryout. Between that and the fact she kicked one ball (a whopping 19 yards) and then reported injury stinks of nothing more than a publicity stunt with little expectation for success.

I'm throwing my BS flag. The call: Personal foul, attention whoring, 15 yard penalty, repeat the kick attempt.

If the NFL wants female kickers, they already have a Farm Team (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCqPsJIULh8) they can harvest. ;)

She was awful. It was obvious she had not kicked a football or any ball for that matter in, her life. The question is, who put her up to it and why.

We had a female place kicker on our football team back in 2002 - Macall was also a soccer player, was a very good kicker and won several games for us that year. She trained for a year before we felt she was ready and to ensure she could handle the rigors of the sport safely.

We also had a female pitcher on our baseball team - Jess's brother was our catcher, she had a 97mph fast ball, and other teams thought it a joke until they faced her pitching. She went on to throw the javelin at Texas A&M and was a 3 x NCAA All-American. She's now an MD.

We also began playing co-ed soccer around 2004 and won frequently among all-male teams. Some of our females were more aggressive players than many of the males.

One aspect of our decisions to allow co-ed teams was the change to the male-female dynamic of the school culture - it became much more collegial in a brother-sister sense; a much more relaxed and less drama-esque atmosphere.

Being able to identify and utilize all the talents available among the student body is an advantages of a private, prep-school athletics league.

I'm sure the NFL will be playing a qualified female or two in the future at specific skill positions. It will be interesting to see who, when, and which ones.

And so it goes...

High School does not equal College does not equal the Pros.

Yeah, it is kinda' funny when a mixed boy girl team kicks a boy team's ass.

Is it as funny when a boy girl team kicks a girl team's ass?

Funny how the girls move up to the boy's team but it's considered to be a downward move going from the boy's team to the girl's team.

We had a similar situation on my oldest sons youth football team. My son plays in a pretty serious league in the Tanpa Bay area. One of the teams they played against had a girl linebacker. Before the game she was running all over the sidelines with her hair in a pony tail. It was evident that she loved getting all the attention. She wasn't a starter but in our league there is a 5 play minimum rule. About half way through the first quarter she came in. We ran an off-tackle play out of an I formation with the full back lead blocking through the hole. She stepped up and got DRILLED by the blocking fullback and went down like a sack of rocks. We got booed which really irked me as it was a totally legal and clean play. It seemed like they expected us not to run the ball to her side or something. When she finally got up she went out of the game and did not come back. Now if you are injured you are supposed to report that and take off you shoulder pads so you don't count against the 5 play rule. She did not do that and was soon running up and down the sidelines again acting like a cheerleader. We didn't make a big deal about it as the game was a blow out for us (If a coach gets caught not playing all his players the minimum plays it is a 3 game suspension). Anyway, it seemed like she loved the attention of being the only girl but wanted no part of the physicality of the game.
