Coffee, Java, Cup 'o Joe, Lifer Juice, one of the elixirs of life sent down from Valhalla .....
How do you take it?
How do you make it?
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee?
What's the best you've had?
The worst?
What would you recommend?
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose?
For me, I just make a large pot using using Folgers Dark Roast, and then add my Irish Cream creamer to the mix.
I have my big 'ol travel mug that holds 32oz and this usually makes my day start off well.
While on the road, I prefer 7-11 coffee (believe it or not :D). I can't stand Starbucks or any other "large coffee corporation" like that.
What say you folks ???

Folgers Breakfast Blend. Black, unsweetened. Best made on a campfire. On the road I take a Stanley vacuum-insulated thermos full of same. If the power is out I'll chew it like dip.

We are very similar.. I use the same Folgers w/diet Carnations Instant Breakfast and skimmed milk, instead of the Irish Cream. :lifter and drink it out of an old(circa 80's) Spring Break Beer mug that holds 32ozs.. This has been my morning starter for over 20 yrs, but it's the only caffeine I drink all day..
We buy Kirkland Espresso beans from Costco and grind them at home. I bought my wife an espresso machine for her birthday a few years back and it's more than paid for itself. Since I started making my own I haven't had a coffee that I prefer anywhere else.

Sometimes it's easier to find coffee than water in the hospital - I drink whatever's in the pot (so long as it isn't that decaffeinated crap) - I take it black and in large quantities. Doesn't matter if it's been cooking down all day.
Best I've ever had was Kona Peaberry that was brought back as a gift from a patient who went to the islands for his Make-A-Wish, although Jamaican Blue Mountain is a close second.

How do you take it? -- Lots of cream, lots of sugar. I'm not happy unless the spoon stands straight up.
How do you make it? -- French press.
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee? -- Either or.
What's the best you've had? -- I have no idea. I've had many.
The worst? -- A local roaster. One bag we got from them produced coffee that tasted like raw sewage.
What would you recommend? -- Starbucks. Bustelo. Seattle's best. And Makers Mark from Sam's Club is also surprisingly good, although it isn't the wife's favorite.
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose? Absolutely. Starbucks, usually. They're consistent and good.
I mail ordered Gevalia's 'Round the World Select Picks' since 1979. Gevalia is now available in the Commissary - House Blend is my choice these days.
On the road it is McDonald's or Burger King's Senior Coffee please.
I take it black and don't care for the flavored stuff. I don't care much for Starbucks or their coffee. Of the snob brands, I prefer Seattle's Best.
Ten cup (4oz) pot a day whether I need it or not.
At home -- Cafe Bustelo or Maxwell House dark roast -- either prepared in a Bialetti pot (Mocha Express or large one) depending on needs/inventory.
Add warm milk as desired.
On the road -- DD (Dunkin Donuts) if available, McDonalds has been pretty good lately. No flavors. Black or w/milk and sugar depending on what I feel like at that moment.
If I'm flying (or need internet access) and the wife buys me a Starbucks card I'll use it in the airport or hotel and choke it down - otherwise DD or MD.
At work: Starbucks, Venti, dark roast(of the day, week, month) with the occasional "red-eye" shot. 1 - 2 raw sugar and some milk, or black; depends on how tired I am.
At home: Whatever I got in the freezer(Tasters Choice, Starbucks, Gevalia or Lavazza), 2 heaping scoops in to the Breville's little mesh basket. One sugar, little milk or flavored creamer.
On the road: Whatever, wherever I can find it. As long as it has caffeine, lots of it. :D
Every day I make a full pot and drink it, usually by 9AM! I use the same ingredients, the same cup, and I follow the same procedure! If this is somehow interrupted all those I work with, near, and for have a bad friggen day!:D
When out and about, any coffee will do. Yes, I have a Starbucks Card and an app that can find a Denny’s anywhere! The only bad coffee is the coffee not had! I lived in Italy for years and pretty much became a coffee snob over there and had to break some pretty hard habits when I got back stateside!!! I am now cured of coffee snobbery and have become sort of a coffee whore!

How do you take it?
In large quantities. Black w/ sugar
How do you make it?
Grind it, 6 well rounded tea spoons (the small spoon in your flatware set, NOT measuring spoons) / 12 cups
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee?
Grind it. Either a Cuisinart Burr Grinder or Cuisinart grind and brew coffee maker. Most of the beans I use clog the coffee maker after 1-2 pots so I started grinding separately.
What's the best you've had?
I'm trying to remember the name, I think it's Sello Dorado or something like that. It's local to Colombia and I haven't been able to find it here in the states. I'm sure someone can help me out with the name, it's the one that everybody that goes down ends up bringing back by the case.
The worst?
It's a toss up between Maxwell house served at the NG Armory and the crap they sell at Costco. One quick note to those of you that make coffee... Trying to make bad coffee taste better by making it stronger just makes it taste worse.
What would you recommend?
Cool Beans Coffee Roasters http://coolbeanscoffeeroasters.com/ They ship fast too. I was getting 5 lb bags from them in Afghanistan within 7-10 days. Those of you that were over there with me and stopped by the 6 or who I gave a bag of beans have had it. Also the chapel had 10 lbs of it when they were out. Personal favorite is the Sumatra. The Jamaican Blue from there is awesome, but at $39/lb is a bit too pricy for day to day.
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose?
I usually bring a thermos from home, but if I have to get some on the road, McD's coffee works in a pinch if it's fresh. Otherwise anything will do.

Folger's Classic from the Bunn, sometimes one of their slightly stronger blends is the general house inventory.
For a treat late at night HH6 will call up to the McD's where the (now grown w/kids) little gal we've known for a couple decades literally has that store. She will put on a fresh pot of their decaf, which is what it takes to do a couple of the biggest cups. The carafe never has a burner under it, then into the cup.
When fresh, McDonald's is actually some pretty darn good coffee (although I've been some places where the water used rendered it beyond help).
Not a $tarbuck$ snob. Sometimes the best cup ever has nothing to do with the ingredients, but the circumstances & who you get to share it with.

Here we go:
How do you take it?
Enough cream to make the color quite light
How do you make it?
A fine Bunn coffee maker
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee?
Grind at the office. For the smell as well as the taste.
What's the best you've had?
At a hotel in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
The worst?
Anything that has set on the warmer too long.
What would you recommend?
Find good beans, grind them yourself. Use good water. Use a carafe instead of a coffee pot warmer.
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose?
I hate to admit this, but McDonald's is actually making some decent coffee.
[/QUOTE]
How do you take it?
Caffeinated, black, with or without sweetner.
How do you make it?
Calphalon drip coffee maker; 1 sm scoop per cup; once brewed, I pour it in a Calphalon thermos to keep it hot and stop the brewing process.
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee?
Preground Cafe Verona, Gold Coast, or Jakob's Kronung (when I can find it).
What's the best you've had?
Any canteen cup of any hot coffee whenever I've been too wet and/or cold.
The worst?
"Coffee American" in Thailand - 5% coffee/95% milk and the ice cubes had insects and debris in them.
What would you recommend?
The "Irish Coffee" at the Buenavista in San Francisco.
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose?
Starbucks "Coffee of the Day" or MacDonald's.
How do you take it? strong, black, unsweetened- hot, iced or room temp doesn't make any difference
How do you make it? pot a day at home
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee? grind my own I order from Gevalia-which is great coffe delivered right to my home every 6 weeks
What's the best you've had? the first cup of the morning. seriously, the best was Jamaican blue(I know I'm supposed to say Kona but I didn't really care for it.
The worst? no idea what kind, but it was served at a conference I attended-actually undrinkable
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so,whose? I usually bring coffee with me, but I'll drink what's available when I run out on the road. I'm too much of a caffeine addict to be a coffee snob.
I buy Dark Roast coffee from Pete's Coffee. Usually a French roast. I brew enough for two mugs. In each mug I add a tablespoon or two of organic butter and some coconut oil. Blend to a froth and enjoy. It sounds unusual, but once you try it, you'll find it difficult to drink coffee any other way...

I use Seattle's Finest #5 Dark Roast ($7.49/lb.) when I cant find Peet's French roast ($11.99/lb.) on sale. I use a #4 ceramic "pour over" with an unbleached paper filter filled 1/3 with finely ground coffee placed on top of my mug. I nuke a Pyrex decanter filled with 2 cups of filtered water for 5 minutes til boiling then pour over. It takes a minute or so to drip through then I add one teaspoon of raw sugar and some half & half. Stir and enjoy. One 16 oz. cup per day.
Dillanos Double Dark or Special Dark, freshly ground using a burr grinder. I alternate between french press, stovetop espresso and drip coffee, all made with spring or filtered water. Usually no accoutrements, I prefer it black, but will do butter or MCT oil on occasion. At work I use a pour over with #4 gold mesh filter. I worked my way through college at a traditional Italian coffee place, so I developed a taste for good coffee and never looked back. When I'm on the road or in the field I don't discriminate, as long as it's hot, not decaf and made within the last 72 hours I'm good.

Kerrygold in coffee is pretty good stuff, I'll do it on mornings where I will be away from civilization for the day. It holds you for quite a while. Beware jumping into the coconut oil too quickly, it will cause some, well, interesting results.
How do you take it? Black and strong
How do you make it? French press, still hunting for an old fashioned perculator which makes the BEST coffee ever.
Do you grind your own beans or just purchase pre-ground coffee? Grind it fresh
What's the best you've had? Anything from my LOCAL roaster, pick it up the same day they roast it. https://www.ihaveabean.com/ I've sent this overseas before, it goes over well...ask Crip!
The worst? Anything pre-ground in a can.
What would you recommend? My local roaster. :D
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose? Rarely, but have been known to stop in Starbucks on occasion.
I also have a Keurig, can make a 1 cup of my coffee or use the k-cup. I order this from Amazon.com and love it. San Francisco Bay Coffee OneCup for Keurig K-Cup Brewers, French Roast
How do you take it? Artificial sweetener, Carnation cream
How do you make it? Grind our own beans which we get at SAMS Club, prefer Hazlenut, pour two big cups, the rest goes into 2 small thermos's
What's the best you've had? I actually really like airline coffee
The worst? Folgers at work especially if it's gotten old, like 10 minutes old :)
What would you recommend? Panera's Hazlenut

Black and strong. At home and the first cup for drinking on the way to work each morning by preference from this local vendor: http://www.cactuscreekcoffee.com/about.htm (previously discussed in another thread). Never had anything from them that wasn't exceptional. At work, it's whatever swill we can buy at the commissary; usually Maxwell House or Folgers. We were using Maxwell house exclusively because the empty containers worked exceptionally well for reloading components - and I was able to collect several every week. :D Unfortunately, they changed the design and the new ones aren't as nice  so for now we're sticking with Folgers because I think it tastes better. (When I'm the one consuming 2+ pots dailly, I get to dictate!)

How do I take it: If mother nature didn't put it in the bean I don't put it in the coffee. Black and strong.
What, Kuerig, yes, Kuerig cups. I have used about every damn thing to make coffee, from french press to espresso pots. Find the cups expensive but good. Since I have cut back form 3 pots a day to about 4-5 cups it is not bad. The coffee I like best and buy is, wait for it, Tree Hugger, and Sumatran Blend. I have found Tree Hugger to be very good and smooth. It is full bodied and does not leave a taste in your mouth.
I grind my own for the espresso pot. But use it only when I am having an espresso with Sambuka.
I used to mix half and half, Folgers Classis and Maxwell House. It made a fine cup of coffee, of course at 3 pots a day, my taste buds may have been a bit off. :)
Best coffee - Tree Hugger, never have tasted a better cup.
Worse, too many to write here.
On the road I drink whatever I can find, not into Starbucks but will drink it.

In Beirut we would take packets of GI instant coffee and pour The US Navy brew over top and mix. Kept us alert enough to keep track of every Shiite, Muslim and Christian in the Bekka Valley...Dad relates that in the field he'd pack a GI sock full of GI coffee, tie a knot in it, throw it in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and enjoy. He also bivvied with grenades in his boots. Good times. Good times.
Find the cups expensive but good.
If you can get your cups at Amazon get on the auto delivery plan, you can save. I get 36 k-cups of the SF Bay French Roast (which is excellent) every month for 15.00, which is a 15% savings. Since I only drink 1 cup during the week and 2 on weekends that lasts me right about a month.

Weekdays - Folgers

The worst?
Starbucks
What would you recommend?
Kona Peaberry or anything from Kenya or Eritrea
Do you grab coffee on the road and if so, whose?
Duncan Donuts
What? No Tim Hortons????? A little surprised that this one didn't come up. Really big in Canada and some Northern areas. My normal brew is 1/2 pot of Folgers Classic Roast, but Tim Hortons when I can get it. My daugher-in-law's parents live in Canada and she brings me back some on each trip. It's a very fine grind which I think enhances the flavor. Good stuff! :)
Take normally Folgers Freeze Dried, Cream and Sugar
Grind them sometimes...
The Best...Cuban, South Beach, FL serves it up nicely, Recommended
Worst, the stuff in MRE's
Carry a small container of compressed Folgers crystals in my fanny pack for unexpected delays in the woods. Expected delays have premix (Coffee, Cream, Sugar) in tied off plastic bags or in MRE heat zip lock bags. Have extra supply in the truck and backpack in ziplock bags!
Good post!

I like Peet's
There you go.
I buy the bean in the two pound bag. Dark French Roast. Grind at home on the Turkish grind setting. It looks like black baby powder. We use a 1/4 cup measuring
spoon lightly packed per 12 cup brew.
Comes out nice black and strong. No cream or sugar.
The HH6 and I go through aboout 3 pots a day. One pot for each kid.
Me thinks Peet's is about as good as you can get.
The San Francisco Bay brand works well when I cant get Peets.
edit to add:
Farmer Bros, coffee is right here in town. THE Farmer Bros are customers, and I like their coffee as well-they bring us some quite often..
Starbucks or Peets. Normally I just go to a coffee shop and buy coffee when I'm at home.
We just got back from Have Ace and while we were there, there was some Dunkin doughnut coffee, and Maxwell left over coffee in our planning room. My team leader and I looked at each other and said "lets go to walmart" which we did and bought starbucks coffee. We made a pot every day since our hours were super long. The only thing I wish I did bring to Have Ace was a portable coffee thermos for the long night time hours. But oh well.
I started roasting my own coffee about a year ago. My own coffee, ground 2-10 days after roasting is the best I've ever had. I don't think its because I'm good at it but just due to the freshness. I roast it with a heat gun in a steel bowl. If you google "dog bowl method" you can find detailed instructions on it. I get my green beans here for $5 a pound: http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee/samplers/green-coffee-sampler.html They also have some good guides and a very active forum with people that take it a lot more seriously than I ever would. It takes about 30 minutes to roast a pound so when I am busy I drink Folgers dark or french roast.
I've ordered some roasted samples from some of the expensive online dealers and still prefer mine.
If you decide to try make sure you do it outside!
