View Full Version : Russian Meteor
With today (Friday 15Feb13) being the day that an asteroid is supposed to pass within 17,000 miles of the Earth, apparently there were a few "splinter" asteroids that came streaking in and made an appearance over Eastern Russia.
Meteorite falls in Russia's Chelyabinsk region; damage and casualties unclear
MOSCOW – Russian officials say a meteorite has fallen in the Chelyabinsk region some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.
A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Vadim Kolesnikov, said the Friday morning fall caused a blast that broke windows.
There were no immediate confirmed reports of injuries, but Russian news agencies cited unnamed sources as saying several people were injured at a school in a thinly populated part of the region, which is on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains.

Guess I better get my hardhat out.
I think the situation was a little more serious than what was being put out.
A quick reality check for how fragile and insignificant our lives on this planet are.

In today's media-driven world, if Orson Welles was a Fox News anchor, he could have used that video to really get ffolkes stirred up. :D

Pete,
You're probably correct in that, that was the shock wave just getting there.
From what I've read in other stories, the meteor was going "hypersonic" at an estimated 30,000 to 33,000mph, and broke up some 18-32 miles above the ground.
So, from the time of the meteor's witnessed break up to the time the shock wave hits, would be about what's seen in the second video.
I had initially thought I had seen one or two other contrails of possible other meteor break ups just above the horizon. Although it was though to tell with the "shaking" of that second vid.
.... and yes, nature is amazing, isn't it. :D
In case anyone is interested, here's the link to NASA-TV to talk about the asteroid fly by today.

I was told it was sent by the COSMOS to remind humanity where the control to change our climate really rests.
For me it is a moment of mixed reaction -- awestruck by the power and humility in how insignificant we really are in the universe. We are merely inhabitants on this living earth.

I would recommend that we review our drop and cover training and NOT race outside to look at contrails and wonder what the bright flash is.
You never know.

The meteorite that exploded over Russian and the asteroid that was close are unrelated. They were traveling in different directions.

What your saying is that they've got us in a crossfire.
Like that crazy Russian said, "It was an AMERICAN weapon.."
Maybe it was payback for this...
