Got all the normal platforms and Special Operations platforms on my list but the most fun was tailgating a C-5 from 16,000 with Gary O'Neil as the MFF jumpmaster.

Second most fun was jumping with about 50 guys taligating a C-141with all of us running off the backend at once!

No, the platform leaves you where you sit. You've got 4 or 5 guys sitting behind each other, legs wrapped around the one in front of them, with one restraint. The JM is the first guy. The plane flies at around 250 AGL, then shoots straight up in the air, and the JM unhooks the belt. You get left sitting in the air.

You can land everybody inside of 40 yards with steerable chutes.

A combination of circumstances consisting of a broken Air Force aircraft...the local geography and inhabitants and an overachieving Warrant who wouldn't take "no" for an answer.... :D

We were amazed at how much time was spent during the crew brief discussing all the different circumstance and ways in which the aircraft could potentially catch on fire.... I think our comments lead to engine 2 NOT being feathered during exit

5 qualifying jumps at Benning November 4-7, 1968 were all from a C119. I remember sitting inside watching the rivets holding the skin on, vibrating around in a circle. The Arava I mentioned before was the most unusual, then C123, C130, C141, UH1, UH60, CH47. 3 jumps in SFOC were C123 (2) and a C130.

Are you talking about that bar just beneath the tail assembly which was to prevent static lines and bags flapping onto the tail?
If so, one of my most painful jump experiences was hitting that bar with my calves when diving out of a Skyvan on a free fall jump. With inexperienced pilots, the Skyvan was prone to rock forwards when a large weight left the ramp (in fact, it once stalled completely, pinning a planeful of skydivers to the roof for 4000 ft, but thats another story) This Skyvan rocked and my legs impacted that bar with considerable force. I completed the skydive with aching legs, which I was sure were broken. On landing, I found only extensive bruising, but no fractures, the same as what was found on the pilot a little later.

B-17 (Bomb-bay Jump)

Martin,

I had a former student jump the "How 'boot that?" B-25 from over at Cavanaugh in Addison. They take off the rear portion of the fuselage to do it. Skydive Dallas does it periodically so it might be fun to check into and have both a B-17 and a B-25 jump in your log book.

This is Becky (black/green jump suit) and some other jumpers prior to exiting. Notice the .50 Caliber waist guns they had to avoid upon exit. :D

Take care,

Richard

A couple of Mechanics (who were also Pilots) that I worked with built it and they were/are good friends of mine. Actually there were several of us that got to jump it. At the time, almost, if not over, 1/2 of the employees @ Metro Airlines were Jumpers.

Just a year ago, a SA Air Force pilot managed to do this with a DC3 and an old buddy was killed by the tailplane breaking his neck. We all though it was impossible to get anywhere near the horizontal stabilized of a Dak, having tried to touch it many times on exit.

Caribou, Twin Otter, Skyhook with pod plus all the usual cargos and choppers. The best was an OV-10 Bronco. 3 jumpers, power climb at the base of the T, gratuity does the rest. Looks like you're doing to be cut in two by the horizontal stabilizer, then your chute opens about 25-50 feet before your feet would hit the canopy of the guy in front of you. Lots of helo casting, too.

Now that's a rare bird. Where'd you find that one?

Pat

We jumped it while I was in the Q-course - Luzon DZ. All I remember about the jump was the Jump masters tell us to watch out for the rear tail wing. "People have been known to hit it. And that wouldn't be good for us." Don;t know if it was true, but it was uneventfull jump. I'm tall so it was a precursor to jumping CASAs and Twin Otter style planes.

The DC 5 tail wing is a lot higher than the DC 3's tail wing. You don't have to be a tall Jumpmaster to lean out and look over the top of the DC 3's. I think a 4 foot JM could still do it.

The reason I asked is that only a dozen or so were built and 2 or 3 never got delivered due to bumping into the ground in a harsh way. :D The last known operational one last flew in 1955.

Does the pic below look like it?

ETA: Did you mean a DHC-5 Buffalo and a DHC-3 Single Otter?

All I know is that the instructors called it a DC-5 and my jump log has a DC-5 on it. Picture looks like it, ours was OD Green in color tho.

Well, rats! :D I'm pretty sure it's not a Douglas DC-5, though, and your DC-3 may not have been a C-47. I was excited about the Douglas version because Colombia had a couple after WW2 and I thought that they may have kept them flying like the Cubans do '50s Chevys. :D (Well, most Chevys don't fly, but you get my drift. ;))

Here's a DHC-5 for comparison:

I've seen a 3, though never jumped one.

Never seen a 5 - thanks for the history lesson!

I've a lot of experience with 4s...

Yes, it is. Quite an aircraft. They added two when they started an airline just prior to 9/11 - and insurance per a/c going to 1 million... end of airline.

although I remember some guy got in trouble for jumping a Cobra one time. ;)

If I remember correctly that incident occured around '86 and involved a Major and also a PFC who were both members of the 82nd Sport Parachute Club. They sat on the stub wings to altitude and then jumped freefall. It happened on a Saturday off duty and everyone involved got into trouble including the AH-1 pilot. I heard they paid him well too.

There is a video of guys static-lining out the back of a 727 on YouTube that I just watched tonight. The video claims to show Air America test personnel drops and also shows test cargo drops.

Pretty interesting 1 minute of history if you can get by the fact that a DB cooper "investigator" put it up.

It made me think of this thread.

My first jump 3 years after school was a dc3 the instructors were like yeah it's the Indian Jones plane. It wasn't very reassuring.

The DC-3 was used a lot and was always a good jump. Used them a lot in central America and Africa. Bolivia has 11 of the in the country and a few are still flying.

I do ot think any of us has enough space I our jump logs for all the jumping we did out of our ass.......

Usually the SGM was incharge of those jumps:eek:

Jumping out our ass was so important that they created USASFC/USASOC and many ore commands that had the only purpose in life to keep us jumping out of our ass.......

CTU had all types of non-standard platforms. I jumped a drone right before I went to prison for breaking into the Chinese consulate.

They should consolidate these into a single AssCom.

I know that it is popular for those fortunate enough to be elsewhere to make sport of USASOC and USASFC(A).

You should come to USASFC(A) and see how many stupid ideas per day (from outside the Regiment) are shot down, or at least opposed as strongly as possible by a junior one-star or two star command.

The TSOCs have an insatiable appetite for ODAs. And not usually doing what you would want to be doing, where you would want to be doing it.

I have worked at every level from USSOCOM down to an ODA. I have served at USASFC(A) twice for a total of six years. Trust me, it isn't Special Forces Command that is coming up with these stupid ideas and screwing things up.

Yeah it was a great jump, did a couple more later on, it was just a little mind f#$k jumping out of such an old plane after not doing it for so long.

Now that's funny rat there :D

Haven't jumped that many different aircraft. But my jump training started early (age 8) when I took a bed sheet, string, & door knob to make a parachute and jumped off the garage roof. Later graduated to the TV antenna tower and climbed to about 3 feet above the second story roof line.

Parents thought I was a little "special".

If they were not absolutely sure, I convinced them when I started my demo training about a year later :D (That' s another story).

Did commo and scuba training in jr. high school.

Medical training came later (high school) when I started practicing surgery on frogs. :D
