The rabbit problem is a bit, well, hare-raising.

Rabbits living near the Denver International Airport in Colorado are crawling underneath parked cars and chewing away brake lines and wiring, CBS4 reports.

The hungry hares’ appetites are taking a big chunk out of people’s wallets, as auto repair shops in the area say they can do damage worth thousands of dollars.

Sounds familiar. I used to have a Honda Pilot until I got back from a year deployment to Iraq in the spring of 2008. I had parked it on Ft Carson along with other vehicles left behind by fellow bachelors. We had planned for the stay-behind guys turn the engines over regularly until we got back. The fact that my battery was dead was the first clue that told me that the arrangement was not fulfilled. The overwhelming evidence of mouse infestation was the second.

The little bastards had come in under the firewall and made my Honda a 4-season condo in my absence. When I climbed in after getting home, the combined smell, amassed chocolate sprinkles and pee stains, and generations of dead mice, along with the remaining survivors, had my skin crawling and my gut heaving. With the little pests skittering around in there I was reminded of "Aliens" when Ripley wakes up in medical facility right after the face-huggers were released and running loose. The first thing that came to mind was the plague or Hanta virus. It made me wanting to reenact the scene in "Talladega Nights" when Will Farrell imagines he is on fire.

I had to call the insurance company to see about getting an exterminator to clean the vehicle. The appraiser about shit himself when he looked in and a mouse popped up to eyeball him. It took quite a long time for him to write up the quote even though he never ventured further into the vehicle's interior.

They scheduled a tow truck to haul it up to Denver to a specialist. The poor truck driver begged me to drive the vehicle up on the ramp of his truck so he wouldn't get sick and orphan his kids.

The insurance company got back with me a day later and said they were going to destroy the vehicle for several reasons, including it was classified as a bio-hazard.

One thing I did learn was that the insulation on the Pilot's wiring is a soy-based product and the rodents just love nibbling on it.
