View Full Version : Stossel: Texas vs California!
Anyone Texas v California show?
I think Stossel did a good job with this! There was a good debate on the gun issue and Mr Lee from Cali just sounded like a moron.

I was up in the Alexander, Dry Creek, and Russian River Valleys yesterday for the Winter Wineland open house of 140 wineries. Each winery was offering select tastings with food pairings and @ $40/person it was a great way to spend the day. Started at Ridge, then on to Murphy-Goode, LaCrema, Walker-Stevens, Armida, Twomey, VMT, Arista, DeLoach, and finished with Hook & Ladder (which is actually the DeLoach family's winery as they sold their label to a corp) where we did a barrel tasting of their to-be-released 2011 Zinfandel paired with two year aged cheddar and 60% dark chocolate.
This morning I watched the sun come up over the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas while drinking my morning coffee - it's 2 hrs to Tahoe and 2 hrs to SFO from the ranch, I have no mortgage and the property is a family trust grandfathered in under Prop 13 for tax purposes, no water or sewage bills (well and septic tank system), my electricity bill is about 1/2 what it was in Texas (SMUD community electrical co-op)), and I filled up today at Safeway @ $2.36/gal (we shop there and earn gas discount points).

I swear it seems as though some of the leftist anti-gun (for anyone) talking heads have gone to SERE; they keep coming back to their circle regardless of the facts.
I say let California be as backwards as they want. If people are willing to live under such laws they deserve what they get. As for me and mine, we will always reside in a state where I can protect myself and my family if its necessary to do so.

I totally agree.
If that is what Californians want and vote for thats up to them. It is also why I will never live there.

Being a contrarian, when every man, woman, and child is moving from California to Texas, – He just couldn’t help himself. :D
Enjoy the ranch, Richard, you have earned it and more.
The “family trust” is a great strategy that even the young should consider.

The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, a fitting retirement location for a former party apparatchik. Well done comrade Richard. Your work in Texas for the party was excellent! :D

Does anyone really NEED to drink that much wine? Probably not, so we should pass some laws to limit a person to 25mL total per day, over 4 cumulative days in any 7 day period. Heck, 140 wineries is probably overkill as well, so let's tax the crap out of them and make them liable for any damages caused by someone that drank too much of their product and caused any damages. Frankly, if you've already had wine, then cheese and chocolate is simply gluttony, so how about we make it illegal to consume more than one of the three (wine, cheese, chocolate) on any given day. You'll be a much better and humble person for the sacrifice.

OUCH!!! :D
...pass some laws to limit a person ...
Good luck with that one - wine's been around a lot longer than guns...as has been envious whining. :p
If they're gonna change the laws - again - I'd better stock up on my 'killer' wines (e.g., La Sirena 2008 Cab-Sauv, Chateau Montelena 2008 Cab-Sauv, Hartford 2009 Sevens Bench Vineyard Pinot Noir, Boeger 2009 Barberra, Gustavo Thrace 2007 Tessera, to name a few), hi-capacity wine coolers, and build me a cellar to secure them.
"They'll get my wine when they pry my varietal specific Riedel glass from my cold dead fingers." :D
A few tips.
If you're looking for a $30-$35 quality Chardonnay but don't want to pay the price, the Bogle 2010 at about $9 is great tasting at an incomparable bargain. Bogle is over on the Sacramento River near Clarksburg about 18 miles from our ranch and we go there for Friday evening summer concerts accompanied with wine/food pairings.

If you're looking for a $45-$60 quality of Pinot Noir, Cabernet-Sauignon, Zinfandel taste but don't want to pay the price, either the Columbia Crest Amitage blend out of Washington at about $8 or the Bogle Essential Red at around $9 are both bargains to go with those hearty grilled red meats.

The Sierra foothills are again producing some wonderful wines, especially Boeger up on Apple Hill out of Placerville which is about 40 miles from the ranch and has some of the oldest Zinfandel and Barberra vines in the state.
Tastings cost over in the Napa-Sonoma-Mendicino areas; they're free here in the Valley or up in the foothills. When doing a tasting, my wife and I "share" so we're only paying for one, not drinking very much wine, and enjoying the experience more.
My wife and i like to think of ourselves as being like a fine wine, we're not getting older, we're becoming more complex. ;)

Richard, thank you I was looking for a new Pinot Noir, love Le Crema but it can hit the wallet a bit. :)
Now back to the regularly scheduled program of Californians ruining other states. :D
