Note that triggered lockdown at Colleyville Heritage High threatened ‘large massacre shooting’
DMN, 15 Jan 2013

Update at 4 p.m.:

Classes at Colleyville Heritage High were dismissed as scheduled just before 4 p.m.

The note reportedly warned of a “large massacre shooting” to be carried out at the school.

It said three students made a list of the “popular and rich kids” they planned to target at the school.

Original entry:

Colleyville Heritage High School was placed in lockdown just before classes let out this afternoon.

An anonymous note found in the cafeteria led to the precaution, according to a memo from principal Joe Harrington. The contents of the note were not released.

Heritage Middle and Elementary schools were also locked down as a precaution, although the middle school released students as scheduled at 3:25 p.m.

“Both Colleyville and Grapevine Police have increased their presence in the area, and district leaders will continue cooperating fully throughout the investigation,” district officials said.

Heritage High, too, was expected to release students at the normal time: 3:50 p.m.

Initially the note was not deemed a credible threat, but the lockdown came shortly before 3 p.m. after additional information came to light, Harrington said in a follow-up note (below).

It’s the second school in Dallas-Fort Worth to be placed on lockdown today (the first being Arlington Lamar).

Parents

At 2:54 pm we made the decision to place the school in lockdown as a safety precaution. A student reported additional information concerning the anonymous threat that was found at lunch. Police are continuing to investigate, I will keep you updated.

The first memo:

Parents

Today, during lunch, a student found an anonymous note in the cafeteria and immediately brought it to the front office. It contained a very vague threat against Colleyville Heritage. We immediately contacted Colleyville police. They dispatched extra officers and began working with us to thoroughly investigate the situation.

At this time the police do not believe this to be a credible threat that would warrant a lockdown. I wanted to make sure you are aware of this situation.
The safety of our students is our number one priority.
Thank you
Joe

If the teachers were packing heat, they could go on with business as usual.

I don't see anything wrong with the note. Just doing Obama's work. After all the evil rich are the enemy.

Maybe there should be a nation level conversation on how demonizing people can lead to bad things happening.

Oh, wait. That's only if the right does it.

My thoughts exactly.

Were I teaching in that school, packing heat or not, I'd think a lockdown would be very prudent.

I always kept my classroom door locked. My class "president" was seated near it with responsibility of opening it for visitors and returning students. My window blinds were always closed, and windows with no blinds had posters or paper already over them.

I didn't want to be in the process of locking the door, or closing the blinds when the crazed person came down the hallway.

When something like that threatening note occurs in a school, the focus of the student body, faculty, administration, and community rightfully changes, and very little 'goes on as usual' until it has been dispelled.
