Zeigen Sie mir Ihre Papiere! I thought this was a joke at first, but after looking at the crime statistics in Paragould here (http://www.city-data.com/city/Paragould-Arkansas.html), and checking other articles, I see that it is not. Theft/burglaries are #1, and way above national averages. Other crimes, not so much. Should they be checking for everyones "papers" even if thy're just walking their dog? IMHO no, but I don't live there. As for reasons for the elevated stats I'm thinking either economic destruction of that town, or drug use, or both. However, treating your hometown like a "ville" in the 'Nam probably isn't the best approach. I believe you can make your presence known without the gestapo tactics. Poor f***ers.

I like cops and most LEO's, but if one were to "stop" me on the streets and ask me for my ID and ask what I was doing I'd simply say "F**K Off" and keep walking.
These idiots are about to give that town away in the very first lawsuit they lose.

My thoughts were an immediate, this will work until they stop the wrong guy.
Braodsword - true, if/IF the policeman can articulate a reason for the stop and frisk (Terry stop). You just can't stop everyone and ask for ID. You MAY stop a stranger at 0300 in the morning to make a contact and inquire into actions/nefarious activity. Part of that stop could be the officer making a quick frisk for weapons premised on officer safety.
Same argument wouldn't hold water in the middle of the day on a sidewalk downtown for the average "Joe". The problem lays in all the cases in the middle of these two. MOO, this is just plain "silly" and is going to either cost the town a WHOLE buncha $$; or, someone is going to get hurt real quick, fast and in a hurry.

Seems to me idiodic. Purely and simply gomer pile idiotic.
And now that this sherrif and mayor have media attention, they are backtracking and stalling for being called out for being so idiotic, and well, dumb, not to put to fine a point on it. (I grew up in small town America, and these guys are a dime a dozen.)
The power of the Internet to sweep in and uncover this small minded crap will hopefully now be known to this little guy.:munchin

Certain states have what are called "Stop and Identify" laws where you have to show a cop an ID (at least provided you have it) if stopped.This can vary from state to state. Here in WI while Hiibel is recognized, there is no criminality of itself attached in failing to answer, and an officer can't arrest for "obstructing" when given Team Sergeant's most succinct reply absent some other criminal behavior. It goes to what the state law is (usually obstructing) if there was already a reason for the detention. Absent that, see Post #4.
YEP! "FUCK OFF" pretty much would be my response also. :)

I rarely get in the debate, however I did some googling and found this posting from Ohio on the martial law idea. Is it legal, don't know, would I resist, don't know, I may keep my powder dry and wait for the real fight I know is coming.

This is what was taught at the academy in 2007. A Cop can make contact with a person in a public place. It's actually a security technique.
If someone is up to no good it's pretty easy to tell just by engaging them in conversation. Seems like just conversation but the cop is actually looking for certain reactions. Like if your in an airport but hesitate when asked "where are you heading to today"
You can continue to walk and tell the cop you don't have the time. It's when the cop try's to make you stop. Then he is detaining you. He is keeping you from getting to your destination. Thats when they technically need a reason to keep you from continuing on.
Places like train stations and airports are not considered public places. They are private property. So basically you have no rights in these areas. In the Train Stations we could technically search someone without probable cause if we wanted to.

In reading this thread aloud to my Chief of Staff and second born, my verbal reaction was "Not in this lifetime". Their immediate response was "Why not If you're doing nothing wrong then you're to comply, it's the law. Take it up with the mayor/city council."
For 32 years, never realized I was living with sheeple. My second born is a talented, if not gifted marksman with both .45 and 9mm. She has CCW (Does not carry). While I disagree with some SCOTUS rulings, I have always been a fan of the Constitution. Which is why I was SHOCKED at their attitude.
My fundamental right to privacy is irrelevant. Previous SCOTUS ruling that ID possession is not required, counts for nothing.
