Going off of the "What are you reading" threads, I thought I would throw this one out here. I did a search, but didn't find anything. If it's a bad idea, please delete it, and my apologies. To start, I'm still listening to Matchbox Twenty's old CDs. "Busted" is my favorite. And though, it's embarassing, I've been listening to dubstep like "Monsters (Kicks n Licks Remix) and "No Hands (Hotrcks Remix). It's nice when you're running for over an hour. Now poke fun. :munchin

By the way, Maynard James Keenan was a forward observer on active duty before being recommended for attendance at USMA and sent to the West Point Preparatory School at Fort Monmouth. He chose not to enter the academy in order to pursue his music career instead. I'm glad he did!

Lately I've been listening to the soundtrack from the Cavalia show Odysseo. It is fantastic music. I took my daughter and my niece to see the show recently, and it was absolutely spectacular. It is Cirque du Soleil, but with horses.

3/4 of the way through Red Circle: My Life in the Navy SEAL Sniper Corps - Brandon Webb (Jon Bailey) 64Kb (2012). One of the first SEAL stories that actually describes a bit more of the post BUD/S training. Webb was also part of one of the first SEAL Platoons in Afghanistan. Pretty interesting perspective.
Will start listening to With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa - Eugene B. Sledge (George Wilson) 32Kb (Audible, 1990) in conjunction with reading it on a tablet.

I am amazed he could rip the way he did with the guitar on his lap! A lot of good players can play, but not a lot of good players can make their guitar sing, and he nailed it. Thanks for sharing.

Completed the Modern Scholar lecture series Cold War: On the Brink of Apocalypse - David Painter (2005). Pretty good history starting with the end of the Second World War. Some of the newer books are starting with the First. This professor doesn't seem to like Reagan very much and tries to insinuate that Reagan actually prolonged the Cold War. While his case has merit, he seems to be rather selective in arguments - as well are wont to do it seems...
I can recommend the first 3/4 of the course and only the final 1/4 for the prospective it provides as long as you have a large shaker of sea salt nearby.

Just finished listening to Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns - Sasha Issenberg; read by Michael Goldstrom (2012).
Wow. For those of us involved in politics, especially Colorado politics this book guts you in the Prologue. Most of us have already read The Blueprint: How the Democrats Won Colorado (and Why Republicans Everywhere Should Care) - Rob Witwer & Adam Schrager and understand what happened here.
Victory Lab gives a recent history of modern campaigns up through Obama's election in 2012. It dives into the process of running a campaign, what works, what doesn't, when and why.
It is chock full of data on data - and not the least bit dry.
It also explains (to me) why the National GOP hired a couple of Democrat political operatives to help elect a local state senate candidate in a GOP primary (he lost)! And validates the tactics, techniques, and procedures RMGO used to win so many elections in Colorado this past primary. Winning!
If you're interested in political campaigning, why you get a bazillion phone calls, mailers, and still see bus stop ads - read/listen this book!

Excellent biography, updated with data from the East German archives. Gave me a better appreciation of the political/religious process and activities in Germany 1936-41. Well worth the listen.

It was a week of Mondays at work. Thank God today was a training holiday and I had leave to burn. Boring. What made this book great was the rich use of Olde English from the 1700s quoting from actual diaries, newspapers and courts martial reports. Delicious.
Captain Cook - Alistair MacLean (Unknown) 32Kb (1972)
Fastidious description of a fascinating man by a fantastic fiction author. Covers the three voyages of exploration and discovery. Interesting tie in with the Bounty.
Gideons Spies; The Secret History of the Mossad - Gordon Thomas (Theodore Bikel) 64Kb (1999)
Fashioned more as an expose and a setting the record straight. Quick listen and interesting insights. More believable than many of the previous misinformation put out on the covered topics. Good early timeline naming names.
Last Gunfight; The Real Story of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral - Jeff Guinn (Stephen Hoye) 41Kb (2011)
Pretty detailed account covering the backstory and very in-depth descriptions of ALL the players.
Lawrence in Arabia; War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East - Scott Anderson (Malcolm Hillgartner) 32Kb (2013)
Wow. Better than Seven Pillars. Author combines many sources and puts into focus many puzzle pieces that were previously indistinct. A must read for those interested in WWI, the causes of Middle East strife, and UW.
My Share of the Task; A Memoir - Stanley McChrystal (Kevin Collins) 32Kb (2013)
Wow. Only 2/3 the way through this. Recommended for those interested in leadership, command, and reinventing established organizations. Not to mention those interested in SOF history (and possibly future?).
Portis, Charles - True Grit (Donna Tartt) 64Kb (1968)
What a great story. Donna Tartt does a magnificent job of telling this Western yarn. Highly recommended.

Well told history of the evolution of battleships, transition form coal to oil, the various skirmishes in the North Sea, the Mediterranean - including Gallopoli, culminating in the final Battle of Jutland. Recommended historical.
Batista, Paul - Extraordinary Rendition (Clinton Wade) 32Kb (2012)
It is about a lawyer who is selected to represent an accused terrorist and the difficulty of the deliberately stacked legal system conspiring against him. Kinda boring.
Arlidge, M.J. - Six Degrees of Assassination (Various) 128Kb (2014)
Direct to audio book commissioned by Audible. Good story punctuated by a varied cast and too much music.

Centered in Turkey/Cyprus - it is a modern day coup-d-tat wrapped up in archeology and legacy terrorism ala Grey WOLVES.

Donovan: America's Master Spy (Unabridged) [2014] - It's a 25-hour audiobook and I'm only 4 hours into it. It's a book about the great man William J. (Wild Bill) Donovan. Unfortunately, the storytelling isn't good. Many parts in the book really drag out. That's what happens when the author tries to include what every man on the planet thought of Donovan in every chapter. Still, if you're interested in the life and career of this man, this is the book to get in my opinion.
