Members of this forum-

There are men fighting the good fight, and those men remain in harm's way. Two weeks ago this reality was brought to the forefront of our on-line family and it commanded our undivided attention.

Longtime moderator and 18D Surgicalcric (aka "Crip"), while attached to an ODA from 7th SFG(A), stepped on an IED during a dismounted patrol and was severely wounded.

We have now had the tremendous fortune to hear from him and he is recovering. His recovery will be long and arduous, but barring unforeseen happenings - he will recover.

For those of you who pray, please offer them to Crip.

Whether you pray or not, each member here should take a moment to realize that between the politics, the Kardashians, Jersey Shore, and whatever gripe you have about the fat lady at Wal-Mart...there are still men in a far away land standing shoulder to shoulder with their Brother's in Arms. They deserve a moment of our time.

That is all.

Thanks for the heads up QP Eagle5US.

QP Surgicalcric,
Prayers out, I hope and pray that you have a complete and speedy recovery. Thank you for your service and commitment to protecting the rights and liberties that we as a nation enjoy, even when many in this country do not appreciate it (or worse); I certainly appreciate it. On a side note, I hope you have internet access from wherever you may be convalescing, so that we can hear from you a bit more often :)

I was stunned when I heard the news and even more shocked to know this was his second event in a few weeks.

Thanks to those here at PS.com for providing information on his condition. I was fortunate to train and work with J during our train up for Iraq.

As Eagle5US has stated, Surgicalcric was severely wounded while on duty in Afghanistan. We are in contact with him and he has written us. His wounds will take months of surgery and maybe years to heal.

You are in our thoughts brother, we wish you a speedy recovery. If there's anything you need just say the word.

Psalm 121
A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

This is the essence of the Special Forces soldier. They work tirelessly at their profession, asking not for fame and notoriety, but only the satisfaction of doing their duty and the support of their families and comrades. They toil mostly in obscurity the dark places of the earth, risking all they have to ensure our freedom.

A bit of the Bard:

This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Crip, don't forget that you have your own Band of Brothers here. All of the QP's and all of us Guests here continue to wish healing, peace, and love to you and your family.

Get well soon!!

I got to sit and talk with Crip last week and asked him a night or so ago if he wouldn't mind me posting his status and what brought him to Walter Reed.

This will be somewhat brief as there is so much more to be told one day. Heroes among us, just doing their job!

As many of you know, Crip was blown up two-weeks earlier while in a vehicle, sustaining some minor flesh wounds. He was in the third of four vehicles and it was a command detonated IED. He had just been RTD the day before going out on this foot patrol to search for contraband and weapons while doing VSO missions in his AOR (which happens to be in the middle of Taliban ((homeland)) territory.) He stated to me that rapport with the locals is practically non-existent and there is a great deal of animosity towards ISAF in the general region. So best to say no friends...but the mission goes on in a semi non-permissive environment. (I.e., not winning the hearts and minds as Washington would have you believe.) I'll leave out the abhorrent ROE these guys are operating under, which leads to exactly these types of attacks, but will say F'ing Politics are killing and maiming hundreds of warriors over there.

The patrol had located so much stuff at this point that the team had started to get separated into two teams, one bagging and tagging for destruction and the other moving on to find more contraband. Unfortunately the K9 team had stayed behind and Crip and four others were moving down a narrow trail between huts. He was on point and stepped on a buried IED most likely a pressure activated device.

He was blown ten to fourteen feet away from where he was, landing on his back and the team aid bag. He never lost consciousness and immediately saw that his left calf and foot were no longer there. Not knowing the rest of his injuries he applied direct pressure to his femoral artery with one hand, while trying to grab anything he could between his legs. His Team Sergeant and a former 18D immediately saw that there were more impending problems. The blast had ripped Crip's perineum (crotch) wide open and fractured his pelvis. The TS immediately began packing his perineum with Kerlix and clotting agents from the aid bag and then applying a tourniquet to his leg. Again, Crip was alert and probably directing his own care...which included some happy meds.

Crip remembers getting on the MEDEVAC and flying to the closest field hospital, and then he woke up four or five days later in Walter Reed having gone through numerous surgeries to repair his two fingers (middle and ring) on left hand, an external fixation holding his hips together, some rehabilitation of his "junk", and the known reality that he left his left foot and calf in Afghanistan.

I've met few people who have such a positive outlook on life as Crip does, all of his injuries are accepted as a fact of life, and he's happy to be alive and spend his life with family and friends...he's already talking with the Doc's to make rounds with them when he can get around.

Many thanks to one sharp TS (former 18D) who knew exactly what to do...never take your cross training for granted. Always be prepared to deal with what kills ya' and not get target fixation on the obvious injury!

And, as Crip says, always allow the dog to do his job, so that others will not have to suffer loss of life or limb!

If you have Ballistic gear wear all of it!

At any other time in military history, Crip suffered fatal injuries on the battlefield. Thanks to everyone along the way, who defied the Reaper, Crip will not only recover, but he plans to stay in the medical field and continue to help others; prosthetic leg and all.

I wish him well, and pray that he and his family grow old together! :D

Thanks Crip, you are one tough Brother. Heal well, live long!

Thanks for the AAR. I was very happy to hear his voice, how strong he sounded...how clear headed he is. He has a plan for his future and I don't believe he will allow anything to get in his way.

There is a long road to recovery, in addition to prayers for him and his family we must keep the doctors in our prayers...that they have the knowledge and experience to take care of him to their fullest capabilities.

And thank you to his TS, who obviously performed life saving measures.

May God keep the rest of the Team safe and sound.

Old Dog New Tricks THX for the Post... Great to hear all is going so well for Crip.

I too will say Cross training is a MUST. I will say so many People in the Military that are on the Ground NEVER Cross train.

No Medical..... No Commo (fill/Load)....... Hook-Line Kits/IED Poles, Mine detectors????? WTH!!!!! DO it.

As far as the Protective Undergarment (PUG).. This is Me.. Ask for them through your CoC. SOF - Request though your FORCEMOD and if you're in Country, get your SOTF to ask CJSOTF-A JET. They are free and if your walking, Like Crip, they will save your BALLS!! Just like Body Armor. 9+ Years ago no one really worn Body Armor. It sucks when you first start wearing them, but after a while you get use to the armor girdle. Just as you did with your Body Armor. Underwear (http://www.armorworks.com/products/detail/protective-undergarment/) and the PUG (http://peosoldier.armylive.dodlive.mil/2012/03/26/armys-pelvic-protection-system-provides-valuable-protection-for-the-dismounted-soldier/)system.

I think every SOF guy should be getting these and everyone assigned to a VSP.

I've received word via one of his SF brothers involved in his care that his healing is exceeding expectations. No doubt of course due to his tendency to take care of himself... :) Which of course surprises no one here.

One of the powers of the internet is Surgicalcric, is not alone, there are many people who are with him. On several other forums, people send their best wish and hopes for his recovery. Our community is smaller and closer than ever before.

Edited to add, Is there a address that we can send our regards/well wishes to Crip. I have been asked by other people, if it is appropriate. Or is there a intermediary?

Apologies for my absence from the board over that past 5 weeks but I have been somewhat busy. Now that things are moving forward and the majority of surgeries and all the foreseeable major surgeries are behind me I wanted to bring everyone up to speed on my situation.

Right now I am still having surgeries one to two times/week. Thursday I will be going back to the OR for grafting the medial side of my right leg - this should be the last of the major surgeries as all my wounds will then be closed. After that my trips to the OR should be for dressing changes only and should only last for a couple weeks/until the grafts take. Physical therapy is going well but is somewhat still limited due to the amount of damage to my right leg and my left not being fitted yet for a prosthetic.

xSFmed has been here assisting me for a couple weeks now and I must say that I don’t know what I would do without his assistance. Despite being in the hospital with the most experienced surgeons and therapists there are still shenanigans that go on with certain services (radiology) and with some of the contract nurses.

Last but certainly not least I want to thank everyone for their support. Your thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be greatly appreciated. I still have a long road ahead as I continue to rehab and adjust to my new norm as well as find how I can continue to serve the Regiment.

Thank You.

James,

thank you for your post and update, and thank you for your service. Taking care of those physically broken is one thing, but the mentally and spiritually broken are quite another. The op post sent chills up my spine. Thank God you are on the positive road to recovery. Best wishes in all that.

Sorry to hear about the shenanigans. I hope you get the best critical care nurses the army, air force, and navy have to offer, as well as the docs, OT, PT, and all. I've worked alongside of them, and can vouch for their dedication.

Still, none of advanced medical breakthrough and dedicated staff can take place of family, friends, and faith. Good to know you have one by your side. I know several outstanding guests and gifts are heading your way in the next day or two :)

Guys,

Apologies for the delay in posting an update - X-sf seems to be doing a good job at that though. That said, things are going well here at WRB for me though it appears I may be here a few months longer than originally anticipated. From what I am currently being told I can expect to be here til about June. The extra time will do nothing but give me more time to concentrate on getting stronger.

I will be getting discharged to outpatient status by the end of next week so Paul and I will be in a two bedroom apt here on the campus and seeing my docs in their respective clinics. I was fitted for my first of several neoprene sleeves a few days ago and have been wearing it for a couple hours/day for now. In a week or so I will be cast for my first of several prosthetics which will have a microprocessor knee (since my amputation is transpatellar) and I will be up on two legs again. For now I have been walking with a walker or between parallel bars. Today for Phys Therapy I walked around the entire 3rd floor but can tell my right leg is still weak from the blast and lack of use over the past several weeks - that will be dealt with shortly as I will be starting two-a-days in the gym Monday. The remainder of my wounds are healing remarkably fast and I should be capable of concentrating on conditioning shortly.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Well, I was in my prosthesis for about 2 hours Friday doing everything from standing barbell and dumbbell curls and tricep extensions to walking 500m on the indoor track using canes for balance. I was fitted for the leg on Thursday and walked about 50' in the parallel bars but that was just to work out the kinks in the socket. It felt really good to be back up on two legs. It will take some time before I will be able to stay on it for multiple hours because my residual limb has to become accustomed to being in the socket and my skin has to adjust to the different pressure. But over the next few weeks I will stay in it longer and longer and will be in the gym with it testing out new squat positions until I am lifting with it.

The difficult part is reigning myself in - I want to push so hard but know that I need to take these first few weeks easier. My Phys and Occupational Therapists have to remind me to slow down. I hope to be ready for my running leg by the end of Feb. About that same time I am hoping to be rucking around the compound here once/twice a week as well. Time will tell but the goal is to run the Army 10 miler in 2013. I am sure I wont set any land speed records, then again I wasnt doing that with both of my God given legs, but to finish would be great.

Right now I am just trying to put muscle back on my frame. I am down from 200# at time of wounding to 160# now, most of which has been muscle atrophy. Skinny isnt a good look for me.

Also, X-SF and I will be in Vegas the last weekend of Jan (I know we are missing SHOT) so if any of you are around I would love to link up with you.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. The support I have received from you guys is unparalleled.

Sorry for the lack of an update in a while.

So yesterday made day 7 being on my prosthetic leg. Sunday I managed to take my daughter to the American Girl doll store then later in the evening we went out for Thia food here in Bethesda. I have transitioned from walking with two canes to only using one for balance and hope over the next week to be walking without that cane. Yesterday I walked part of the distance to the Naval Exchange where x-SF and I did some shopping, then I made rounds up to the 4th floor and ICU so they could see their hard work making progress. It was probably in the 1500m range all in to include some hill work that was a first for me and my new normal.

I still have a few surgeries to go, a couple of which will be six months to a year out with Urology/Plastics wanting to wait for the edema to dissipate so they are sure where and how far things need to be moved. The SOCOM LNO here seems to believe I will be headed home somewhere about the end of March - this is based on my progress. I want to be running (have the biomechanics down at least) before I leave here so we will see. I am still pretty weak on the right side due to all the damage done to the medial portion of that quad from the blast coupled with the muscle atrophy from being bed ridden for six weeks but it is getting stronger by the day.

On a more heartfelt, serious note, no heavy handed words can begin to express my gratitude for each and every one who has provided a shoulder for me to lean and cry on or provided guidance and contacts, have said prayers, made visits, and/or donated money to the Crip (not for much longer...) fund. Without all of the previously mentioned I would not have been able to concentrate on the recovery that will eventually see me back to Group and back to hunting down the enemies of our nation wherever they may be hiding nor would my family have been able to spend as much time as they have at my side.

I pray fervently, yet hope the day never comes, that I will have the opportunity to repay the debt I owe to you all. May God continue to bless each one of you in this next year as he has me with your friendships.

You have no debt to repay. Every person that donated time, money and any other form of support did it out of love and respect for you.

I don't know you, have never met you, yet I value your inputs on this forum. I wanted to help you because of what you have taught me and others like me that can only look on from the outside. You have taught us all that we have hope. We have brave men, like you, leaving family behind to go to another nation and help end terrorism and bring hope to the general population.

Every time I get another BS tasking from my chain, I take a deep breath and think about you. If you can be thinking about running within 90 days, and walking more than 1500m just 7 days after getting your new legs, I can do anothe fu$%ing PowerPoint for my boss.

You just focus on getting better.

So it has been a while since I have written an update for you guys. Sorry about that; things have been a lil busy between surgery a couple weeks ago and my visits to the various clinics and phys therapy appointments.

So with that, my rehab has been moving forward at a rate much faster than I anticipated. I have now been on my “new” leg for a little over 7 weeks and with the exception of my left stride being a few inches shorter than my right, my walk isn’t much different than what it was before, even without the ability to feel the ground with my left foot. Balance training is going well. Today as part of that training I practiced tossing two (2) 12lb medicine balls around in a circle with my NMA (non-medical attendee) X-SFmed and another guy from 20th Grp who is here visiting me for a couple weeks. By the end of it both of them had used their face to catch the ball; they really should work on their reflexes. In addition to balance training my Occupational Therapist has been working on some scar tissue massage on my right medial thigh and groin. This isn’t going as well, or maybe I should say as painless as the balance training. For those of you not fortunate enough to grit through a session, it is a deep tissue massage used to free up adhesions along scar and suture lines and allow muscles to move more freely in the affected areas – it isn’t very pleasant at all but after it’s all said and done it will be worth it.

Yesterday myself and two other 20th Group guys headed down to the National Mall where I walked from the Washington Monument to the WW-II Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial and back along the Korean and WW-I memorial. It was great being out and being able to walk where I want. By the end of the afternoon I was tired. Friday I have surgery to repair a ruptured eardrum from the blast - this should be my last scheduled trip to the OR for another 6-7 months.

Thursday I will be upgrading my leg to a CarbonFiber socket (the portion that suctions onto my residual limb), a mechanical knee, and ankle with better range of motion for rucking. With the change to the CF socket I will be changing from a semi-bionic knee (http://genium.ottobock.com/uploads/t...l-standing.jpg) to a Total Knee (http://www.ossur.com/?PageID=13447) so I can eventually be fitted for a BIOM bionic ankle (http://www.iwalkpro.com/) to assist with the mechanics of walking and rucking. Usually the phys therapists only want guys to change up one piece at a time and I will in essence change the socket, knee, and ankle all at once thus changing everything we have worked on up to this point. She is certain with my progress thus far, coupled with my abnormal sense of balance that I won’t have an issue progressing quickly to match the new setup’s potential. Keep your fingers crossed.

Along with this change we are confident my bone scan will have a favorable outcome and I will receive my carbon-fiber “C-leg” for running by the end of March. Everyone involved was hoping this would have happened sooner but with WRNMMC being the self-licking ice-cream cone that it is nothing happens here quickly.

All that said, my hope is that I can be totally discharged from here at/near the end of April and headed to Eglin AFB where I will continue to rehab with the THOR3 trainers at 7th Grp and the guys at API’s Eagle Foundation.

Crip,
As I read through these pages, I simply stand amazed at the progress.

As you read your posts, this immense trauma that would justifiably end someone's professional career. Or in the civilian sector would have to potential to put someone immediately on permanent and total disability, I find this is not the case with you.

I read the progress and knowing how bad that injury can be, it sounds like you simply had a delay in your own goals and targets of life.

What I am trying to say is that your posts are more like someone who had an ACL blown out in a knee and was scoped... Not that of someone who's lost a limb.

You are an example to us all, your strength and determination impact more people than you may ever know.

GOD is good, and I am so glad that you are recovering.

Well yesterday I had a Tempanoplasty (repair of hole in ear drum) with access through my ear canal and as soon as they let me out of the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) I was packed and on the road towards South Carolina to begin 30 days of Convalescent leave.

This should be a great test of what was focused on in both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy during the past few months. I brought both the new carbon fiber socket with bionic knee (see bad ass pic below) and the older silicone socket with the mechanic knee to test it out while home. My hope is to have a list of new things needing to be focused on during Therapies when I return.

Sorry for the delay in updating this. I have been a lil busy with the rehab of my body as well as my brain and spirit. Despite my best efforts, this has taken a toll on me. In an effort to get back to a normal, albeit new normal, I have been away from the board a while and have been spending time in the pool, weight room, on the road rucking. Last week I made 8 miles in 158 minutes with a 45lb ruck - no land speed record being set but its a starting point.

I ran for the first time Thursday since my injury, I was supposed to run Wednesday but put it off to 6 June** hoping to pay homage to the men who gave their last measure on that solemn day. As for the run, it was a mere 3/4 mile but it felt wonderful to be running again. The left leg feels fine but my right inguinal space was tired yesterday and is a bit sore today - then again my anatomy in that area isn't quite the same so I imagine the muscles are still trying to figure out what all happened Thursday.

According to my phys therapist less than 1 in 20 (5%) of above knee amputees ever attempt running again and those that do are past the one year post injury date. I am 5 months ahead of schedule. I will be up running again Monday morning and am hoping to be released to run on my own in the next weeks. As you can see from the video I have some gate issues to work out... Army 10-miler here I come!

Standing tall and holding the line here.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. With them I will continue to lean forward in the foxhole.

** Here at Walter Reed there wasnt even a mention or memorial to the men who gave all on 6 June 1944, but the command had time to pay respect to the Caribbean-Americans in our history. It made me so sick I used a comment card, complete with name and rank, to express my contempt for the command here and their disregard for those great men while at the same time lifting up peoples who would rather identify with themselves and others that would further separate our nation among racial lines than with America the great - it disgusted me!!
