A soldier from Moore County was one of two Special Forces warriors killed this weekend while on patrol in the Chak district of Wardak Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced their loss in a Sunday press release.

Sgt. Justin C. Marquez, 25, of Aberdeen and another soldier were shot while “on dismounted patrol” the Department of Defense said. They died from wounds received from small-arms fire on Saturday, the Army said.

Also killed was Warrant Officer Joseph L. Schiro, 27, of Coral Springs, Fla. Both Marquez and Shiro were assigned to the 1st Special Forces Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), out of Fort Bragg.

Marquez was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was his first deployment in support of overseas contingency operations. The Army said he enlisted in the Army in January 2009 and completed his initial Infantry and Airborne training in June of that year. He was then stationed at Fort Bragg and attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection.

In February 2011 Marquez graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (A). His military education included U.S. Army Airborne School, the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) School, the Advanced Leaders Course, and the Special Forces Qualification Course.

His military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Medal, the Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab.

Marquez is survived by his father, mother and brother, the Army said.

To those that knew both of these fine men better than I could ever have, my condolences to you all.

I only knew Justin briefly, but I can tell you he was a well prepared young man who wanted to move from the HQ staff in the S6 to a team. He took it seriously and was welcomed by his team for his drive and motivation. I don't recall a time that I didn't see him doing some kind of PT. Good young man, was starting out good and had the making of a fine Quiet Professional.

Joe Schiro, well Joe was one hell of a good man and Soldier. He drove me nuts at times because I felt unprepared to handle his deeply thought out questions for intel support. He was smart and made you think.

Gents, you will be missed. I assure you your team and this SOTF will not let your departure be unanswered without a strong response. We will continue to live by our Bn mantra.....Pressure, Pursue, Punish. 3Ps and DOL

We attended the funeral for Justin today.

They opened a historic little church a quarter mile or so from his house for the ceremony. The hand fans (no electric wiring) had a print of the 1860 construction pledges for the building. Sherman's Army marched up the road in front of the church in 1865.

The church was packed to the rafters (balcony as well), speakers outside the church carried the service for those who couldn't find seats inside, and both sides of the roads were lined with people waving flags. Several hundred cars parked in the lot and on the shoulders of the road. Probably every spare LE car in the county was there, along with a fire truck or two.

Justin's casket arrived in a glass-sided hearse trailer, pulled by a Harley and escorted by at least 50 bikes.

Nice little ceremony, attended by MG Reeder, COL Dinter, CW5 Serano, CSM Zaiser and CSM Meffert.

Burial followed at the back cemetery of the church, amid lots of 19th Century tombstones and markers.

3rd Group did the flag ceremony and looked sharp. Well done, brothers.

The CG presented the flags to the family, in a very touching service.

Justin's family seems to be doing as well as can be expected. Please include them in your prayers for a while.

WO1 Schiro had a nice reception as well:
