U.S. military chiefs ordered troops to exercise 'courageous constraint' and even warned them they could be charged with murder if they shot any Taliban without permission from above.

Yup, I had to re-read the URL thnking it might have been written by the guys at the Duffleblog.......
If this is true, we don't have leaders in A-Stan just "yes men".
Aiding and abetting the enemy...whats the article that covers that circumstance?

We (as in the overall CF) have set the conditions for things like this to happen.
How can we accomplish our real job, which is still to kill or capture the facilitators and commanders of terrorist networks, with such leashes around or necks? Our own limitations are ruining the effectiveness of our capabilities.

Actually the real job is to take away their support of the populace and deny them any support. You can't kill your way to success in UW.
Good point, and I agree -- that is the ultimate answer to the problem. I should have caveated that by saying I was referring to what my specific job was.
It definitely needs to be a many-headed approach, IMHO

Actually the real job is to take away their support of the populace and deny them any support. You can't kill your way to success in UW. That is the problem all along the military just does not get. Saying that allowing the bad guys to plant a bomb without doing anything because it wakes up the locals is just plain stupid as well as counter productive. You are handing control of the local population over to the insurgents this way.
Che might disagree with you..............;)

Gentlemen, I'd like to point out that this article comes from the Daily Mail, a highly disreputable newspaper known for requiring retractions for many of its articles (They've been successfully sued six times in the past 10 years alone for libel and slander). Think of it like STAR back here. Its a garbage rag and you should take everything they print with a hefty dose of NA.

Just because it was featured in a paper that has a poor reputation doesn't make this story less true. There is worse than this that could be published...

What TS said.
Second we aren't conducting UW in Astan.
Third, not all of Astan is on the same timeline. Its a pipe dream to believe that because Kabul and Khandahar are "relatively" safe that other places arent very kinetic still. Its these places where there should be daily funerals for dead TB. Instead, and in the same spirit as the draw down in Iraq, there are commanders who want the SITREPs to read that its all roses and sunshine.
