This is really sad news:
WILLIAMS, Ariz. -- Larry Dever, the four-term Republican sheriff of Cochise County, has died in a one-vehicle crash near Williams. He was 60.
Dever's death was confirmed early Wednesday by the sheriff's department. The accident was reported around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. Devers had been on his way to meet relatives in the White Horse Lake area for a hunting-and-fishing trip, according to a press release from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said he's shocked and called Dever a patriot and true Western sheriff. A perfect fit for cochise county with its colorful history which includes tombstone.
"He wears his Western getup and cowboy hat and was a novel figure, not just in Arizona but nationally," Babeu said.
Dever and Babeu worked closely together on border security issues.
The sheriff died just four days after his mother, Annie Mae Dever, 86, died of cancer.
