Watch your mouth -- everyday phrases like "hold down the fort" and "rule of thumb" are potentially offensive bombshells.
At least according to the State Department.

Anyway - I'd think "Hold the fort" is more an acknowledgement that if you don't keep your eyes wide open a bunch of them individuals are going to come pouring over the stockade and kick your ass.

ETA: MOO, some of the types residing in this type of office generally - and the PC police specifically - remind me of the notion of a political commissar.

No worries. IMO the PC crowd is like jock itch - irritating - but very treatable and soon you're ignoring that shit and gettin' the job done.
