Not sure how I feel about this...Mixed emotions. However, if the database is correct, I know now that about 50% of the residences on my street have at least one CWP holder.....

http://www.wral.com/news/state/nccapitol/story/11295888/

Find concealed carry permit holders in your area
*When entering street names, do not include house numbers or extensions such as drive, avenue, street, etc. This database contains permits for the WRAL viewing area, including Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, Nash, Northampton, Person, Sampson, Vance, Warren, Wayne, Wilson and Wake counties. You can search using one or more fields.

Edited to change title. Changed it for ya - I don't think NC gives a hoot about the CHP (CA Hwy Patrol). ;) Richard

Sucks as now robbers can just look up neighborhoods and target them for weapons.

Unfortunately in my neighborhood I'm one of only a handful with a weapon much less a CCW and I grew up with my neighbors. :(

I've had mine since 91 and I'm just glad I've never had the occasion to pull it.

I wonder how they would feel if we put up a website that listed valuables such as jewelry? The media would be all over it.

I like the Texas response

11. Can others find out if I am licensed to carry a concealed handgun?

Generally, no. Information on individuals who are licensed to carry a concealed handgun is confidential and not subject to requests under the Public Information Act. However, the Department may release information about a concealed handgun licensee to criminal justice agencies for law enforcement purposes

Concealed carry folks must have a clean record to obtain that license. These are basically law abiding folks.

This personal info becoming public creates too many opportunities for bad guys to abuse it one way or another. Also, there is a fair amount of bias against lawful owners of firearms.

There are exemptions to public records - this just strikes me as one of those things that ought to be exempt. Generally, too much downside and very little upside to publishing these types of things.

OR Target the homes that they know will not be protected???

The WRAL could end up with a wrongful death suit or maybe seen by a young aggressive DA as aiding and abiding a homicide??

Sadly, much as I like the personalities on WRAL, they have an unabashedly liberal bias. Unfortunately, so does every other local broadcast station and their "on-air personalities" aren't nearly as palatable. The MSM is no longer the watchdog/mouthpiece of a free people.

Why even have a license?

It tells the authorities(?) who you are and where you live. This is how it started in England. The government decided to outlaw guns, and all they had to do was go to your door and confiscate them. The cops even laughed and joked how it was like taking candy from a baby.

Kelly Hinchcliffe, who produced this thoughtful project that pries into the private lives of law abiding citizens, is available on Twitter https://twitter.com/recordsgeek

FWIW, Ammoland.com communicated its concerns with WRAL (source (http://www.ammoland.com/2012/07/17/north-carolinas-wral-tv-publishes-identifying-info-of-nc-concealed-carry-holders/#axzz212BWQqO2)).WRAL web editor Kelly Hinchcliffe responded to complaints by insisting that permit information is public record, ignoring the fact that obtaining it requires a written request to the State Bureau of Investigation. Moreover, although the names of permit-holders were not disclosed, the partial address information (including apartment numbers), particularly on small streets, makes it possible for criminals to target specific homes for theft.

A lengthy conversation with WRAL General Manager Steve Hammel, while pleasant, produced no significant movement on the part of the station. Their position is that they have sufficiently de-identified the address information. When it was noted that street numbers had appeared initially for some records, he noted that it had been corrected by Friday. He also said they would “look at” trailing apartment numbers which are still part of the addresses. But the bottom line is that the station refuses to pull the link.

There was a situation some years back (in OH if I recall) where a paper had printed names/addresses of permit holders. An estranged wife trying to ditch wife-beater had moved (and acquired a permit). Wife-beater sees her info and just like Earl in the Dixie Chicks' song, rather than just sign the divorce papers, marched right thru the RO into her house and beat the hell out of her. Unfortunately for all she wasn't able to solve his problems permanently beforehand.

If the owners of this TV station are serving the public as well as the reporters promoting this CCW search as a public interest; then is not their home addresses and phone numbers also 'public' information - subject to publication on a web site?

I do recall the .org for CCW in the OH incident above did some counter-battery fire just along those lines and relentless in nature, with the suggestion that - given their obvious editorial views - these homes were not likely to have armed owners. (Let the criminal extrapolate from there.)

Interesting for the thug.

What's a thug to do? Hit the house with the CWP while the owner is out hoping to score big on weapons or hit the house without the CWP hoping for less resistance?

Before the thugs read too much into it - there are only 4 CWP's listed on my street. I know for a fact a lot more than that are armed in their homes.

So thugs take your chances

The "point or service" a lot of the MSM says it is furnishing is so that when kids go over to play the parents will know if a gun is in the home.

Well, if the parents of my kid's friends miss the gun case in the foyer they are sure to see the .58 with bayonet over the dining room door.

WRAL contact 1-919-821-8555. I left a nasty gram on their FB page and called and talked to them over the landline.

Here in Indiana, a Bloomington newspaper or TV station attempted to do the same, disclose the block (not street number) of all permit holders and the Indy Star duplicated the results in Indianapolis.

The backlash was pretty severe and the information was taken down.

Your welcome. It is an interesting read, and the JPFO did some solid work on translating the Nazi gun laws. They have an article on the GCA and it's possible Nazi links here (http://jpfo.org/common-sense/cs34.htm). Additionally I posted an article (http://professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=426574&postcount=1) some time back from the Atlantic(of all places) written by Prof. Winkler on the racist roots of gun control.

I read that article when published and while it did a pretty good job, the author misunderstood the concept of regulation by applying the modern use of the word to mean government regulation or control to limit rather than the period concept of making regular to enable.

Regulation was not government mandated restrictions....
