View Full Version : FBI Investigating Islamists in the Military
What makes them extremists? Are they devout Muslims, or have they strayed from the true path and are now following the nebulous 'warped view of Islam (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/20/us-usa-defense-islam-idUSBRE85J0XJ20120620)' promulgated by the Pentagon.
The FBI has conducted more than 100 investigations into suspected Islamic extremists within the military, NPR has learned. About a dozen of those cases are considered serious.
Officials define that as a case requiring a formal investigation to gather information against suspects who appear to have demonstrated a strong intent to attack military targets. This is the first time the figures have been publicly disclosed.
The FBI and Department of Defense call these cases "insider threats." They include not just active and reserve military personnel but also individuals who have access to military facilities such as contractors and close family members with dependent ID cards.
Officials would not provide details about the cases and the FBI would not confirm the numbers, but they did say that cases seen as serious could include, among others things, suspects who seem to be planning an attack or were in touch with "dangerous individuals" who were goading them to attack...

I fully agree, Dusty. I trust the judgement of the FBI. I mean, if you come up on the radar as an extremist then you're probably doing something wrong. The ft hood extremist probably could have been caught prior to the tragedy had they started this prior. It came out afterwards that he'd been a member of a number of extremist websites and chat rooms. Just my two cents. Thanks for posting SF-TX

Don't worry - as soon as Holder finds out about the investigation he'll squash it.
Is this yet again Barry attempting to spike the ball for his royal re-election campaign??
The FBI and the Department of Defense declined to discuss the figures on the record, but three sources with direct knowledge confirmed that the numbers were revealed in a closed session of a House-Senate committee hearing in December. The FBI also declined to say whether it has compiled more up-to-date figures since that time.
"I was surprised and struck by the numbers; they were larger than I expected," Sen. Joseph Lieberman (Mr Connecticut Flip-Flop), an independent from Connecticut and chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, told NPR. He stopped short of confirming the numbers.
About A Dozen Cases Face Full Investigation
I am not a statistician, but 100 leads, with 12 probables, out of how many bodies?? maybe 4000 muslims in the US Military...
And don't forget: Brought to you by the NPR (national presidential reelection news speak bureau).. :munchin
I really don't see this as surprise..
Older articles but interesting, nonetheless…

100 x 13 = 1300 KIA
100 x 29 = 2900 WIA
Root them out.

I don't hold a lot of hope for this. The army still refers to Hassan's episode as "Workplace Violence" not a terrorist act. As long as the government hides behind language, the truth will be hard to find...
Get Gibbs on it! ;)

Yeah, Holder is a bit questionable in my opinion, Crip. Every tree has at least one rotten apple. Hopefully after Hasan's trial this summer they'll wise up and actually call his actions what they are. A terrorist act.

...Hussein's* trial this summer...
Jeez Louise! You follow any news? Like Time, NYT, Army Times, WaPo, Fox, CNN, SKY, MSNBC, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Medved, NPR, etc?
The Hussein's are olde news and long gone.
And OBTW - WTF is a "We'rewolf"????
And so it goes...

"we'rewolf" is the title of a song by Every Time I Die. It's a rock/southern metal group.

Richard that's a whole lot of extreme left wing news you're reading......MSNBC, really? (Seriously, really?);)
We'rewolf (I like the screen name) try the Wall Street Journal, Foxnews, Forbes, Financial Times, Drudge Report (kinda tabloid) Stay away from MSNBC, NPR, NYT and CNN.
Richard is just jealous he was not creative enough to think of a cool screen name like yours.:D

Team Sergeant,
I'm a huge fan of the WSJ and like to stay in the "No Spin Zone". Fair and balanced. I just can't get wrap my head around Shepard Smith.

I think We'rewolf is a good user name too.
Maybe Richard (and the rest of us) should be reading Rolling Stone to keep up on the Rock/Southern Metal scene...
I also made the same connection that "Hussein's trial this summer" would lead to a hopeful 'conviction' this November.
As for the former profession once known as journalism, I may seem a bit cynical, but I really do not trust any "news" organization any more. Even those who still employ reporters tend to rely on AP and Reuters for their info in order to generate/report news. AP/Reuters seem to be both politically and culturally biased (liberal and Europe). Personal, cultural, and political bias in news has always been with us, but never in the last two century's has it been so pervasive.
There is no TV/cable news that I trust. But I do try to watch MSKKK and a network news broadcast at least once a week. I consider it OPFOR... I watch FNC for breaking news and I try to catch Special Report when I can. I tend to follow stories and they develop on Drudge, but I try to balance those stories by comparing and contrasting what the WSJ has to say. Probably my most trusted source. For a good collection of opinion pieces, look at RealClearPolitics.com (http://realclearpolitics.com/). I'm often up early, so I can catch the stories from Europe before they hit here. CanadaFreePress.com (http://www.canadafreepress.com/) is an interesting site reporting on stories that don't seem to get traction in America.
As an aside, I find it interesting that Canadians and Brits come to America for health care and Americans go to Canada/England for news...
I like/dislike listening to talk radio when I'm driving. I just don't like the yelling and spewing of talking points style of that format. I do like reading their books. Medved and Beck's books are great resources. Check out Mike Rosen (http://www.850koa.com/pages/mikerosen.html) for some traditional conservative viewpoints without too much drama.

MR2-
I appreciate the suggestions for news. I'm always trying to look for new, unbiased sources. I'll have to check out some of Rosen's stuff. I assure you I wasn't trying to be a smartass by labeling the type of music. I wouldn't read the tabloid junk in Rolling Stone anyway. :) No offense to you or Richard.

Richard :munchinDitto the 2nd one. Didn't find a single word about Holder or Obama in today's Icelandic Review but learned that
Actor Edward James Olmos is to join Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, and Paula Patton in Baltasar Kormákur’s new film 2 Guns, currently slated for a 2013 release.
They have nice sweaters. They are also apparently well-grounded.
Word of advice: Unless you’re going to spend your whole life trying to influence our culture, don’t try to change us during your short stay in Iceland. We’ll fight you. And win.
A benefit of being allergic to many forms of paper is that the skin will be burning long before the eyes.
A benefit of going through the LAUSD half a step ahead of Prop. 13 was having instructors in elementary, junior and senior high school who taught students to read news articles critically.
Among the benefits of studying the "new" history are that one learns to parse every word one reads and writes, and that concepts such as "objectivity" and "truth" are constructs. (Conversely, among the downsides of studying the "new" history are that one learns to parse every word one reads and writes, and that concepts such as "objectivity" and "truth" are constructs. It is a good thing I'm not OCD-ish.)
When circumstances allow, The Economist is my preferred news source. Not only does one get to a read newspaper with densely written, thought-provoking articles and editorials, you also get a preview of the stories the NYT will cover two or three months later.
IMO, the two most trustworthy cable news outlets are TWC, CNBC and RT. These services make no bones as to what they're about.
MOO, the scariest "news source" these days is Whitehouse.gov. From its shifting architecture to its content, the theme is "manipulation disguised as dissemination."
My $0.02.

I'll echo that! I subscribed for a time, but now read it at the local library. It's still quiet there, and they keep it pretty cool... and I don't have to directly pay for the a/c!
I just wish they served drinks.:D
It's still quiet there, and they keep it pretty cool... and I don't have to directly pay for the a/c!I don't remember what a quiet public library sounds like anymore.
On the plus side, there's plenty of gum on the undersides of tables if I need to patch up the binding of a book. And the smell of other patrons will keep the undead at bay if the zombie apocalypse unfolds. And when the remote sensing team at the CIA looks in to see who's downloading hundreds of FOIA documents about Area 51, its members will be thrown off by all the batshit crazy mf-ers sitting around eating Fritos.
Back on topic. I have a lot of confidence in all components of the DoJ. Several times over, AG Holder has proven his managerial skill, and demonstrated that he's immune to the tides of domestic politics.
IMO, the two most trustworthy cable news outlets are TWC, CNBC and RT. These services make no bones as to what they're about.

lol That's absurd. Anything with "Turner" in it or "NBC" is so left it's sinister.
Shit. No wonder.
lol That's absurd. Anything with "Turner" in it or "NBC" is so left it's sinister.
Shit. No wonder.IME (i.e. working in the cable television industry several years back), TWC stands for The Weather Channel when discussing cable news outlets/services. This abbreviation comes from the architecture of IPG (interactive program guide) software in which every service has an abbreviation that is used industry wide, and most of these abbreviations come from the services themselves. This way, viewers can find services by abbreviations or by logos (which can change), and wiseguys back at the head-end can't get cute by relabelling services such as "HBO" into "HOBO."
FWIW, when discussing cable MSOs (multi system operators), Time Warner Cable is often shortened to "Time Warner" when talking about corporate. But more frequently as "Time Warner [division name]" e.g. "Time Warner New York," "Time Warner Charlotte," and "Time Warner LA." Exceptions to this rule of thumb include Time Warner Cable's R&D shops, in which case one would say "ATG West" or "ATG East." Exceptions to this rule of thumb surfaced when software engineers got to sit through two or three conference calls a week that ran as long as six hours with ATG East. In which case, other names were used.:D
