My opinion is the same for official DOD recognition of any social or cultural group, the DOD overall should be mute. We serve together for a common purpose. Uniqueness stands out in a military that should be uniform. We can be individuals on our own time, in our own home, in our communities but any official celebration of a sub-group within the services should not happen.

In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had banned gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces.
Details are still being worked out, but officials say Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wants to honor the contributions of gay service members.
"Now that we've repealed `don't ask, don't tell,' he feels it's important to find a way this month to recognize the service and professionalism of gay and lesbian troops," said Navy Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman.
Now there will be the LGBT soldier/sailor/airman/marine of the quarter/year awards :D

I don't think they're doing anyone a favor by singling out gay/lesbian soldiers. What you do off duty for the most part is your business but we all look more or less the same as soldiers for a reason. I've served with gay/lesbian soldiers in the past but I never asked and they never told. I agree with leaders not discharging a soldier just because they find out he is gay. At the same time I don't think he should be singled out. Let him keep his personal life personal.

This is the type of stuff that grinds against the grain of many. I lived this for years in big corporate America. Seems like such a contradiction -- want to be treated equally (race, gender, sexuality??? ) but "special" or different. This is the type of grandstanding that ignites intolerance IMO... Never thought I'd see the day the military adopted such kumbaya policies. Disappointing..

Because for the appointees at the DOD the message is more important than the mission? It's an election year and the struggling incumbent is doing everything humanly possible to shore up his support with his constituencies. Just today the administration announced that they don't need the Congress to offer amnesty to a large segment of illegal aliens. A celebration of Gay service is a not so subtle reminder to the gay community that they owe the Administration.
Is it "political correctness" or "political interference"?

C. All of the above.

Thats a great question, if we are gonna embrace all these other factions that make up the great melting pot that is our military then fair is fair. But as it is now we are never going to get past all the labels. It is time to quit celebrating diversity, I guess it makes the Panettas of the world sleep better at night and gives them a chance to assuage their guilt over the past wrongs that have been heaped on the LGBT wing of the military. It's time to get over it.
I think its fabulous!:D

This is just another way to rub our noses in it. Personally, I'd prefer they all went back into the closet.
