I still remember my first drive in movie. My dad was stationed at Macdill and he and mom loaded up all four of us, in our pjs, into the VW bus and took us to go see Star Wars when it first came out. Great memory!!

I couldn't begin to remember all of the movies I've seen at the drive in. For my parents it was affordable entertainment as they could load me and my sisters in the station wagon and watch a double feature for a few dollars.

I remember hanging out on the playground at the base of the screen with friends from school who's parents used to go to the movies at the same time or let them come with us.

It was the Fox 1-2-3... the Fort Drive-in was on the other side of the Blvd. Good memory, you named them all!!!

My first Drive is was with my big brother and his date (what bad luck for him!) to see Batman in 1966. :munchin

We still have a drive-in. It still works and has 4 screens. I've been in the process of restoring my grandfathers old Chevy C10 pickup. Last weekend I hired a sitter and took my wife on a date (praying the truck wouldn't break down before we made it to the big screen). We cancelled cable TV years ago at our house, so this was kind of a treat. Guess it's the simple things in life...

I was stationed in Hawaii from 1985 - 1989 and me and the wife would go the drive-in located in Pearl City every Friday night. It was great. Two movies for $5. We still talk about those days now.

I think it has gone the way of the "flea market" these days.

Another part of "Americana" that is gone!

There were a few in the NW Chicago suburb, however in the late 70's they started to disappear......... One especially started showing "Porn",which could be seen outside the drive-in very easily....... They told them to put a 12 ft high fence in order to continue showing, they refused ,went to court, lost and that was the last one to bite the dust.......... :(:p

The one outside of Ft. Campbell was XXX in the mid 70's. At least that is what someone told me . I was in TN. in early May and came across a couple of active drive-ins between Nashville and Memphis.

Check this one (http://www.malco.com/cinema_shows.php?theatre_pick=33) out the next time you drive through Memphis. However, I hate to burst any bubbles...the only XXX you'll ever see there would be if they played a Vin Diesel re-run of the movie bearing the same name. :D

At the Mt. Vernon (Illinois) Drive-In Theatre back in my day, the first feature was usually "kid-friendly" and the second was for mom and dad. I'm not sure what the first movie was, but the second was Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, and to this day a 'fuller-figured' woman in a plain white slip still does it for me.

Mom and dad thought I was asleep in the waaaay back seat (looked backwards) of the Olds Vista-Cruiser!:D

I think the reason I was good at land nav was having to find my way back to the car after a trip to the snack bar or restroom. You learned terrain association!

That's cold. I remember taking my kids to see Star Wars at the theater in Bad Toelz. Thanks. I feel old now.

My parents used to take my siblings and I to the Drive-In quite often when I was little (late '60s). Back then you still had to use the speakers with cords but later you could use the radio in the car for the sound. Went a lot during my High School years (late '70s) because it was a good place to meet girls. Saw plenty of shock absorber tests being performed in the back rows. They were actually popular and successful businesses in Southern California because of the weather. There are two left in the area where I live but one has been slated to become a housing developement. Yeah, had all kinds of fun at those places over the years.

My fond memories are of an Olds station wagon with some homemade sandwiches and popcorn...the snack bar was for ice cream for a young family on a budget. Kids were in pjs so when we got back home late parents carried us to bed.

There was a cool swing set on the way to the snack bar.

Later, as teens it was $5 a carload and low man (boys) got the trunk.

Did have one memorable date at a drive-in.

Thanks for the memories.

China Firm To Buy AMC Entertainment For $2.6 Bln
By Chris Oliver
Published May 20, 2012
MarketWatch Pulse

HONG KONG – Privately held Chinese property group Dalian Wanda Group Co. said Monday it has signed a deal to buy U.S. movie-theater operator AMC Entertainment Holdings in a transaction valuing AMC at $2.6 billion. The deal would create the world's largest movie-theater chain, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The two companies said AMC's headquarters would remain in Kansas City and that the deal isn't expected to reduce AMC's current workforce of 18,500. The Chinese group has plans to invest an additional $500 million in AMC "over time" and has no plans to change AMC's strategy or management team. The deal will still need the approvals of U.S. and Chinese regulators.

Wow, I wish !

My one experience with a friends "Scrambler" - shift on the column - and involved a beach day - no drive-in.

Wish I had met you back when - your car and your generosity would have helped my social life immensely !

As I recall it was Angie Dickinson in Big Bad Mama playing at the drive in on the edge of Muscatine, Iowa in 1974 that tripped my young trigger.

The Cascade on North Avenue in West Chicago is still open! It's nice and IIRC it's about 9.00 for two movies.

...the drive in on the edge of Muscatine, Iowa...The 61 Drive-In on US 61 outside Maquoketa, IA (really Delmar) is still running like the Energizer Bunny in the summers and looks like $7.50/per for a double-feature. Little kids are free; you know, the little things that are supposed to go to sleep when the grown-up's feature comes on.

I could believe the backseat of a '65 Mustang but a Volkswagen? You must be either a dwarf or a contortionist. :D :p

Big Teddy,

That would be the "53-Drive In" in Palatine, that you're talking about.

http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/5223

Back in High School. we used to sneak people in, in the trunks of our cars. It was always fun to see how many we could actually get into certain trunks. I drove a '73 VW Super Beetle, so I could only get two small people into my trunk. :D

It was always funny to drive by there when the porn movies were playing. You'd see cars on the side of the rod with their hoods up, "pretending" to have engine trouble. :D
