LOS ANGELES - A U.S. Army soldier who prosecutors say falsely claimed to have fought in Vietnam and Afghanistan - and to have earned two Purple Heart medals and a Bronze Star for heroism - was indicted on federal charges on Wednesday, the 68th anniversary of D-Day.

Command Sergeant Major William John Roy is accused of lying about his service as he sought disability, medical and educational benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek said.

Roy, 57, was awarded more than $27,000 in disability benefits and $30,000 in educational benefits after submitting bogus evidence of his combat wounds and bravery in action, Mrozek said.

This guy is one of thousands who are taking advantage of the VA. He probably got tired of hearing all his buddies regale him with stories of how much they are getting in disability payments each and every month. I have been around more than my share of these people, they know no shame. Why weren't his claims properly vetted? I have a friend who works for the VA, in fact he helps people with their claims. He claims he is getting 70% disability pay, he served in the peacetime army 74-76 and did not complete his initial enlistment as he was determined to be less than fit to be a soldier. He says to me "well you must have gotten hurt at some point while you were in." Those benefits are for real soldiers with real problems not the shirkers and layabouts. This is an issue that needs to be addressed especially in light of the record number of claims being made.

Funny that, North Carolina National Guard SGM John Letuli lies, fraud and deception were much more extensive. Letuli deliberately placed soldiers lives in harm's way and he received nothing more than a letter of reprimand and full retirement benefits.

I guess being Samoan has its benefits.

North Carolina National Guard SGM John Letuli you are still a bottem feeding spineless scumbag.

I just checked AKO (I have CAC card reader in my house). All of his information is still on there. I had no idea that MACV SOG was still operating in Viet Nam in 1974.
