* Report written by doctor who helped Lincoln hours after the president's death in 1865

* Dr Charles Leale, 23, was just six weeks into his practice and was 40ft away from Lincoln during performance of 'Our American Cousin'

* 21-page report details medical procedures used in attempt to save president's life

Interesting bit of our history dug up from a box long stored away.

In Bill O'Reilly's best seller "Killing Lincoln", covered this very well; pages 217-32. Not only did the "new doctor" repeatedly pull clots from the bullet wound, he also cleared the airway of any obstruction, and did chest compressions in an attempt to "stimulate his heart". The good Dr. Leale found that when he would evacuate the clots from Lincoln's wound, the President seemed more comfortable. Dr. Leal stayed with the President , along with the Army Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Barnes, and Dr. Taft who removed the bullet. They also used mustard plasters and brandy as stimulants. Dr. Leale was the one that was monitoring Lincoln's pulse and essentially pronounced Lincoln dead. Dr Barnes placed the silver coins over Lincoln's eyes.

If you have not read O'Reilly's "Killing Lincoln", I would be a great one to add to your list.
