What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?
My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jet fire 22 short. I have carried it for many years including while hiking. I never leave without it in my pocket.
Of course the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". This means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend, companion, or family member because if something happens there is someone to go get help. I remember one time while hiking with my girlfriend in northern Georgia, out of nowhere came this huge Black bear charging us and was she mad! We must have been near one of her cubs. Anyway, if I had not had my little Jet fire I would not be here today. Just one shot to my girlfriends knee cap was all it took....the bear got her and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace. That's one of the best pistols in my collection...

That's what I love about you Teddy, your subtlety...
"NEVER" without a buddy? I hike alone all the time using GOTWA + PACE + common sense.

Am I reading this incorrectly or are you joking?
Seems like you said you shot your girlfriend in the kneecap and the bear was preoccupied killing her as you walked away.
Just wondering.

Oh yeah .... remind me to tell you the reasons why, when scuba diving you ALWAYS dive with a buddy and ALWAYS carry a dive knife.
It has something to do with sharks .....
I'd tell you now but, I don't want to upset Solar. ;)

well since its the comedy zone i'd offer this...i carried a cz in 7.65 (32 ACP) for years...my gun club buddies laughed and gave me stick about the lack of put down power the round had...then i asked them if they would want to get hit twice in the face wiith it....i sold the piece to the gun club prez

Personally, I don't care to be shot with any gun-even a Daisy.
Somebody ought to develop a .17 cal HRM handgun. The caliber wars would get all skewed. :D
Haha... when I see big blocks of text on here - I usually just read the first and last line to see if I should read the rest... serves me right.

That is why i date fat chicks. If the gun misfired or i miss i can still out run them. Always have a backup plan cause murphy will show up.
I don't know Okie...ever seen a bison move when it's pissed?
Otherwise, a little off-brand hammerless .22 LR semi auto. (gun show impulse buy). Fits in your back pocket.
I think caliber would be inversely proportional to confidence and proficiency :D
Its a bitch to hit anything when DT's set in.
Practice makes perfect...... :D

I had a friend who bought one of those Charter Arms .22 Magnum derringer revolvers, a tiny little thing. He owned a service station in a bad part of town, so wanted something he could carry in his overall pocket in case of robbery.
We laughed at his choice of protection, and laughed even more when we took it to the range and found that , not only was it very difficult to hit a man-sized target at three paces, but if the target was actually hit, the bullet had turned and made a keyhole type hole in the target.
Shortly after the day on the range, my friend, Don, was attacked in his shop and shot in the side from very close quarters with a 9mm. He managed to get his little revolver out of his pocket and jammed it into his assailants ear and pulled the trigger. The assailant dropped dead on the spot and Don survived his gunshot with no long lasting ill effects. Don was killed last year by a bad tempered elephant. Got a tusk through his femoral artery. I dont know whether he had his revolver with him at the time, but even if he had, I dont think he could have reached the elephants ear.

"What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?"
The largest caliber I have immediate access to.... :D
Two events in OH in the last year or so proved the fatal capabilities of .22lr rounds. A young boy shot his mom in a dispute with a single .22lr round to the head. She died before paramedics arrived. And how about the Chardon highschool shooting - 10 shots fired, 8 fatalities IIRC. once again, with .22lr.
Many many more examples are out there, some in combat.
