Shooting Range in Austin, Texas

Does anyone know of a shooting range in the Austin, Texas area that they would recommend?

I'm moving there soon and would like to know of a good range.

IMHO, Red's is garbage. It's indoors, and from what I can remember, pretty pricey. It was always crowded, as well. I haven't been there in a while, so that might've changed. Personally, I would recommend Copperhead Creek, but depending on where you're moving to, it could be quite a trip. It's off of 1431 between Lago Vista and Marble Falls. They've got several thousand acres for RV parks, miles of off-road trails, and a pretty nice shooting range that hardly ever has people on it, at least when we've been there. People are friendly and they usually don't make us pay the full rates. (Dad's an LEO, might have somethin' to do with it)

If that's too far, there's Eagle Peak. It's also a couple of miles off of 1431 between Lago and Cedar Park. About 20 miles closer to Austin that Copperhead. Outdoors, with a large number of slots. I think it's just $10 if you've got a range card. The problems with them are that, 1. the range masters are damn strict. saw them chew out a 10 yr. old because he was carrying his .22 through the office without a parent around. 2. the rifle range is limited to stools or chairs with sandbag rests. At Copperhead, you can stand, set up a chair, go prone, whatever.

These are the only ranges I've been on, so they're all I can comment on. Like I said, if you don't mind driving, (it's a nice drive anyways) I would recommend Copperhead.

I am a member at Lone Star Gun Range, It is East of Austin. You can get yearly memberships, or pay by the day. It is in Lockhart Texas. They have 2 covered pistol ranges and I believe the rifle range goes out to 300yards, not sure have never taken a rifle out there. There website is WWW. lonestargunrange.com.

IMHO, Red's is garbage.

As an alternate viewpoint to that one, Red's (both locations) is very supportive of women and beginner shooters, although all types of shooters go there. Austin Sure Shots, the women's gun club, shoots out of Red's. Great group of ladies.

As far as prices, it's always more expensive to shoot at ranges in big cities. Below are basic prices - always costs less for military/LEO, multi-visit punch cards, discount/ladies nights, etc.

DFW Gun Club (Dallas) = $18
Elm Fork (Dallas) = $16
Quail Creek (Argyle) = $14
Elk Castle (Ft Worth) = $14
Winchester Gallery (Ft Worth) = $13.50
Red's (Austin) = $14

I've been shooting at all of the ranges above....all were very crowded, weeknight or weekend. The longest waits I've had for a lane to open up were in Dallas (over an hour). Red's was no different. What can you do, lots of people in Texas like to shoot.

This is a professional soldier's website, and I realize Red's may not meet the needs of experienced, professional shooters, depending on what they want to do at the range. But I thought your choice of wording was a bit severe. Red's is good people, whether they meet your needs or not.

I have never had to wait to shoot at Lone Star Gun Range, But it is a little ways out. i believe the charge is $10.00 or $12.00 for non members not sure. They charged me 8 when I took my Grangsons. I believe Reds is $12.00 an hour, have not been there in a while. I have been to both of Reds ranges and found nothing wrong with then other than the fact that they are inside and kind of close, but still not a bad place to shoot. I would rather drive out to Lockhart and shoot outside. Just me...

Best of the West. Hands down the best range in Central Texas.


9 tactical bays 50m wide and 75-125m long where you can do what you want, by yourself, without worrying about some fat ass wheelgun bearing zombie hunter negligently shooting you.
Steel bangers and Larue's out to 1000y under a covered awning with probably 50 shooting positions.
Skeet shooting if you are into that.

You can actually do good training there. It is in Liberty Hill, TX about 25 minutes from downtown Austin. Eagle Peak won't let you shoot FMJ ammo (they say there are too many houses around....wtf?) and will chew your ass out if you fire two rounds without a one second pause in between. Like the above poster said, they are Nazi's and it is not conducive to good training. Red's is alright if you are taking a girl to shoot or need to sight in a deer rifle but not really a good place to train. They are very female friendly with rental guns and "Ladies Night" deals. Dietz Range in New Braunsfels has silh shooting out to 400m I think but haven't been there in ages. Austin Rifle Club has some good highpower matches and training but I haven't been there in ages.

To be clear, my comments towards Red's were not directed at the people there. They are nice people who know what they're doing. I just don't like indoor ranges, and I don't like crowds. Also, I haven't been to the one in South Austin. I've only been to the one in Georgetown.

I've heard good things about Best of the West. Although, if you're getting there in 25 minutes from downtown, you're hauling some serious ass. :D

Eagle Peak Shooting Range, 20026 Lindeman Lane, Leander, TX 78641. (512-267-1400) This is an outdoors range, we found it to be adequate for target practice. This range is Northwest of Austin and West of Round Rock.
